As others have mentioned any greatest guitar player list without Glen Campbell is bogus.

I don't recognize all the names but since it's by Rolling Stone I'm guessing they all are R&R.
I'm glad someone offered up Roy Clark.
In college days of early 70's Roy Buchanan was said by some to perhaps make such a list.

Their #3 is my #1 ( I love Led Zeppelin!)
Their #1 is definitely top five.
Their #4 is good but way too highly ranked. (Joe Perry unranked is better.)
Their #9 made his entire career on one good solo in the Layla intro.
What no Kenny Wayne Shepard? Come on!
I am very surprised that they don't have any Metallica or Nirvana members in there since RS loves those two bands.
Prince should be on there just for his "Let's go Crazy" solo.
Sorry - your comment on #9 is absurd - while the body of work is compressed into a short time frame Duane more than held his own against #2 in those sessions.

These lists are always silly, since there are thousands of great guitarists, singers, drummers, etc.

How about Robert Cray, Robben Ford, Eric Gales, Albert King, Doyle Bramall II, Gary Moore, Jimmy Thackery, Leslie West- and a few hundred more?

Albert King was #13 point taken though

Zero modern rock guitarists is interesting (no Tom Morello, Slash, John Mayer, Jack White, John Frusciante, John Petrucci, Johnny Marr), no heavy metal guitarists (Kerry King, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai) and no Brian May. 🤔

It's all opinions.

I agree Zappa and Garcia both pushed the rock very far up the mountain for others, but not that commercial unfortunately. I cherish them both.

I also think Van Halen is easily top five. He changed the world and brought us 6 multiplatinum smash albums. He wrote hits showcasing his jaw-dropping talent. Destroyed the world on tour. He's royalty. IMO
Yep! All opinions. I can’t think of one Van Halen song I like but have many friends who love the guy and band.

And since my previous post did not include any of the incredible female guitarists out there, I give you Alice Cooper's touring shredder - Nita Strauss:

Garcia is the weirdest for me. I have no idea what he's doing most of the time and I never really play along to the Dead. But listening to him so much over the last twenty years has taught me to speak in complete sentences while improvising. That dude tells whole stories but at least I can talk now. It's subtle but important.

I would drop Jeff Beck and Keith Richards and put Mark Knopfler in at 4 and Allen Collins in at five. Why? Because it is Mark Knopfler and the man who played the greatest guitar solo by anyone in a southern guitar band.

I think that after the top 5 you have a huge drop off, but Jack White just might be knocking on the door.

#9 made his career on the Layla solo? Oh my. You might want to listen to Live at the Fillmore East just once before making that statement, or perhaps know that he was the driving force behind one of the best bands in American music history, Btw, Clapton gives him credit for the genius behind most of the Layla album. #9 is known as the best slide guitar player of all time. One good solo, omg. Prince is a great call.
Upon further review... I spent the week listening to Duane's work and kept an open mind... When I heard Whippin' Post from the Fillmore East I was BLOWN AWAY! Then, I listened to Jessica and Revival and they were simple amazing and beautiful melodies. When I am wrong I will admit that I am wrong. In this case, I stand corrected. Duane Allman was a GREAT guitarist... Thanks Shep!!

Really like the Dead .. very good musicians and song writers. Given all the fans that recorded their concerts, there is a lot of their live work on the net.

These hands shook Mick Jagger's hand, strummed more than 3000 guitars and helped pen many rock classics. These hands travelled the world, playing in concert halls, stadiums and amphitheatres in front of millions of fans and sold out shows. These hands performed for heads of state and royalty. These are the hands of the one and only
