Nothing wrong with good freshmen players. Cal's problem is he seemed to be happy with all freshmen players and you need a balance of both.

3 of Cal’s last 4 teams were by far his oldest teams. Tshiebwe, Reeves, Toppin, Wheeler, Grady, Mintz, and Brooks were all upperclassmen.

No matter where they come from, you need at least one elite guy. So far that hasn't been Pope's approach, but it needs to be. Instead his approach has been basically mid major basketball with more talented players.

I love Pope and when its clicking its great to watch. However vs an elite talent more times than not that elite talent is just going to beat us.

He absolutely needs to stop paying 12 guys really good nil. Start paying 2 guys great nil, 5 more good nil, then fill out the roster with the most efficient guys you can find at the best price.

Yes i know there wont be as much depth but if you're down to guy #12 your season is already not going great.

I know money talks, but he may not be the kind of coach a lot of kids want to play for. His approach may not suit them.
I hope it's not true, but it could be.

I'm shocked people actually think this. Pope is not the kind of coach people want to play for?
He will get the most out of these young men because they respect him and like his system.
We've struggled a bit out of the gate but I'd say players enjoy playing for him way better than Cal.
Let's watch this play out a bit before we lynch the guy.

Funny. That freshman looked pretty important for Louisville as he was almost single handedly burying our team. Take him off of UL and they’re not remotely the same team. The freshman class this year is probably the best many, many years. I’d put good money that the title winner is one of the teams with a top freshman.

Elite, I mean actual elite, freshmen will always be important. The top 5-10 guys. The best approach is getting 1-3 top freshman each year depending on how strong their class is. Then surround them with good vets. As it stands the UK teams Pope is putting out there doesn’t have the talent to win a title.

The problem was he only had those upperclassmen because he wasn’t getting elite freshmen like he had in the past. His last team was his best chance to make a run since 2017 but he blew that due to his stubbornness and ego trying to prove fans wrong.
