Looks like if starmount beats alleghany mitchell will be small 1a, if alleghany wins mitchell will be smallest 1aa team.

just quickly figuring with pencil/paper the line is Mitchell...Atkins...Starmount...Highland Tech & Hobbton all have 1-9 records...a couple of wins could change things depending on what gets you in

What teams, if any will opt out of the playoffs? Not sure how that will affect the seeding. I think it has in the past and if this season is any indication the NCHSAA has some serious issues at hand. Half of the 1A playoff teams are charters who play home school teams to inflate their records or because "nobody will play them..." Not knocking any team that wins the 1A but even the Murphy fans will have to agree that beating the MIC or whatever charter school won't hold the same weight as beating a Mt. Airy, West Montgomery, Swain etc........

No answer to the system but play a tough schedule gets you better prepared but then hurts you in seeding and more travel time. Could finish second in your conference but seeded third in playoffs. Oh well. Play ball

I really don't see how this is year is that different from previous years. I feel like it's always been a representative from the SMC rolling through the rest of the weaker teams in the west. I'd love to see Mitchell go 1a and take on Murphy. Lol I was kinda hoping somebody from the SPC would rise to prominence and shake things up but MIC changed that lol.

Exactly. Me saying between 502 and 506 could change after Friday...subject to some variables like the results of some one-win teams' last games and whether any schools decline to participate in the playoffs.

Rumblings are starting that some teams in 1A may choose to stay home. That would move the cutoff up. Should be an interesting two weeks for sure.

Agree..... with the intro of the charter and home school teams you water down an already watered down product.

Don't want to say. It's not official and I'm almost certain that it is a decision made at an administrative level. As in the players aren't yet aware.

It's the sign of the times my friend......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. A coach told me it costs more to travel to some of the first round playoff games than they make at a home game. I fully believe that. Some of the 1-2 win teams have less than 100 people at some of their games. Figure driving a couple of hours with a bus or two and then you have coaching staffs that are there out of necessity not desire and the decision gets easy to make. Look at the teams that forfeited this year already. I know each circumstance is different but are they really? If you are Chatham Central what are you going to gain by traveling to Murphy to lose 65-0? A T shirt saying 2016 NCHSAA Playoffs. It's a flawed system and with the budgets the way they are and things being run as businesses more and more each day it comes to what makes the most financial sense for the main cog in the wheel.

Bottom line, too many teams are in the playoffs that do not have a chance to make a run. In 1A it is worse due to the first round travel that some teams have and teams with two or three wins playing in the post season.

A couple of years ago the 1A schools were shown an option of four rounds with the finals being played the week before the other three classes. It was thought this would bring more attention to the 1A title games which was a complaint of the 1A schools. The schools were overwhelmingly against it. They did not think it was right to be treated differently than the larger classes. This from the schools that pushed for subdividing and the pod system.

So will Perquimans be in the small 1A? Past three years they have been in the 1AA bracket.

If it was changed so that you had to have at least 3 wins with at least 1 win coming in conference, I think I would like that system much better. You cut out the teams that really have no shot at belonging in the playoffs and create a better product. It's not a perfect system within the 1a ranks due to geographic locations, but it would be better than what's currently in place.

Cut the teams to a set number. Ridiculous that 64 teams go to the playoffs in 1A. Having a set amount to win does not work as smoothly. It needs to uniformedcabd structured in advance.

They should have some kind qualifications to make the playoffs, like have a .500 record or better,and/or all conference champions, and if it happens to be more/less than 32 teams make a bracket to fit than scenario, maybe some years it would be less than 32(maybe 26 teams only qualify) or maybe some years it might be 35 teams that qualify, just make a bracket accordingly

I happen to think it is fine the way it is. Some of these posters are coming up with some really ridiculous schemes to avoid one week of lopsided games. It should be very obvious that each category must begin with either 32 or 64 teams. Nothing else will work without the inclusion of an unfair system of bye's and/or odd elimination rounds. 64 may be too much but 32 is probably too few teams to start with. In 1A ball, there are many teams that simply have to play way up (play much bigger schools) for much of their schedule. Also, smaller schools can easily lose a couple key players and suffer during the season, the regain them in mid November. So, at seasons end, several good teams may end up with losing records for these reasons. I have seen many such schools end up going deep into the playoffs. Let's keep it this way. Cutting the field to 32 teams would just end up rewarding teams with the weakest schedules.

There is not a huge amount of money being made by the NCHSAA off of first round games.

If that is the concern why did the NCHSAA recommend to cut one round off of 1A?

I agree on your view of a lot of people's ideas. Also with you on 32 or 64. Do not agree on rewarding the weakest schedule. The playoffs need an overhaul and I think a computerized power poll is a part that is needed for seeding. 32 teams without it is all first and second place teams and a few at large.

For seeding purpose, if a conference has 3 teams tie for 1st in a daisy wheel, 2 are 1aa 1 is 1a, do all three draw straws for conference standing for playoff seeding
or would the two 1aa teams draw straws for seeding in 1aa and the 1a team enter seedings as a conference champ?

The conference standing would be determined before they are seeded.

Its getting worse every year for 1 A teams. I know a few teams that won 1 or2 games I don't think their going if invited. Look at South Robeson with 2 wins, probably going to Murphy 1 round. 6 hour bus ride for what, playing one more week? Guys this is crazy. 1A teams are going to suffer money losses. These schools budgets are not very much at all.
