The way I read the article, it sounds like the AD's are just now discovering that per some kind of fine print in the playoff deals they were not aware that as long as ND is ranked #12 or higher next year, they get an automatic slot....

I find it hard to believe they didn't know that already, but whatever. ND's tantrum is blowing up their faces it would seem. GOOD!!!

GOOD! I hope it does. I've never understood all the special rules afforded them while other university ADs/Admin sat on their hands and allowed it to happen.
If you want your own special rules...play in the sandbox by yourself.

They should tell them they won’t play them until they join a conference. Said this a long time ago - so did many others. Wouldn’t take long if they did

I think if every P4 team sent them.noticw that they were removing them from future schedules, ND's tune would change real fast.

How will those NBC ratings be with ND playing 12 G5 teams? When is that contract up for renegotiation?

All hellfire and brimstone would rain down if a 2-loss SEC team was ranked in the top 12 and didn't make the CFP.

I'll be surprised if the playoff doesn't expand to 16 teams next season anyway, rendering this provision moot.

Actually, ND has it written that if the playoffs go to 16 teams and ND is ranked as low as 13th, they have to be included in the CFP. It’s remarkable how much power/deference is given to one university. Thats why they don’t have to join a conference.

Even then, it's hard to imagine a year in which enough sucky conference champs made the playoff that the #13 team would be excluded from the field of 16, but for that provision.

I don't care myself.
Who fills up the ACC stadiums and drives awesome TV ratings = ND. The other ADs have no intention of not playing the Irish. I’m excited to watch ND football on the 2026 revenge tour, even if much of the schedule is weak ACC teams. As a USC grad I can still say Go Irish and know that many people will never understand. ☘️

Dude, I'm literally Irish and I hate Noodle Lame.

They play absolutely no one, hoping to back into a playoff scenario and then when they finally do have to face a "real" team in the championship game or in any kind of playoff situation, they get hammered and exposed for being weak and pathetic. - Their strategy has gotten them into 3 championship games after 1988 and they have lost every single time. Noodle Lame hasn't been relevant to college football in nearly 40 years, and counting......

Modern era does not lie:
Here's a look at their significant postseason games since 2000:
  • 2000: Lost Fiesta Bowl to Oregon State.
  • 2006: Lost Fiesta Bowl to Ohio State (34-20).
  • 2007: Lost Sugar Bowl to LSU (41-14).
  • 2013: Lost BCS National Championship to Alabama (42-14) -- and they were ranked #1 at the time. :ROFLMAO:
  • 2018 (CFP Semifinal): Lost Cotton Bowl to Clemson (3-30). -- :ROFLMAO:
  • 2019: Won Camping World Bowl (33-9).
  • 2020 (CFP Semifinal): Lost Rose Bowl to Alabama (14-31).
  • 2021: Lost Fiesta Bowl to Oklahoma State (35-37).
  • 2024 (CFP Semifinal): Lost Orange Bowl to Florida State (14-31).
  • 2024 (Championship): Lost to Ohio State (34-23).
Notre Dame simply does not belong on the same field as "real" teams....

Furthermore, next season, the Golden Lamers play a schedule in which only 4 teams had a winning record this year. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Hence - Noodle Lame. They are a joke. A laughing stock. They could lose every game for ten years straight and STILL BE ranked pre-season top #25.... it is absolutely absurd at every level. I hate them. Worse than Clemson. By far.

I understand perfectly fine: They suck!! Entitled PrIICkles. Screw em'.

I don't care who fills up ACC stadiums, either, and I'm not exactly influenced by the blatantly anonymous, for that matter.

Sad and jealous is no way to go through life! Good luck and maybe ND will see SC in the CFP next year…

“Who fills up the ACC stadiums and drives awesome TV ratings = ND?”

ND is no where near the top of the Nielsen Ratings. In fact, they are below the Gamecocks and only slightly above Vanderbilt in viewers. Let that sink in for a minute.

Sad and jealous?

If schools refused to schedule them they would be forced to join a conference and would no longer get special treatment. They have had advantages no other school has for years. It would take no time at all for them to be begging to join a conference full time if teams would refuse to schedule them otherwise! Just as simple as seeding final 16 teams by CFP poll and seeding them - no automatic bids, no buys. Don`t know why the powers that be make things so complicated when they don`t have to.

Reality is, if any skool could pull off what ND has in regards to independence they would. ND hasn’t wanted to join a conference, everyone else just wants them too.

At the same time, they are an ACC member in all but football and lean on it for football. Their AD got mad at the ACC commissioner for essentially doing his job. So they’ve long had some advantages that everyone would love to have, but if those start to disappear they don’t get to whine about it. They need other big players in order to be relevant so they may have to accept it’s time to end football independence.
