Football starts with Monsters up front on both sides of the ball. They have to be FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND. I still can't understand why our O line that averages 320+ lbs can't push a defense back. That's coaching philosophy . Franklin was too concerned about throwing the ball to the expense of the running game. POWER wins games.

And the Bear was 0-4 vs. ND. Everyone has a nemesis to some degree.
True but are we pretending Joe was better than Bear?
Bryant won 6 titles. Saban has 7.
Paterno is an elite coach--one of the best of all time. He wasn't the greatest--there's just bias towards a fan base to believe your players, coaches and teams were the best--once they're gone of course--while they're here that's questionable lol

Kaytron played yet another great game. One carry it took 7 Buckeyes to bring him down. Only do much he can do without any threat of a forward pass. WRs are completely incompetent. And what happened to Reynolds?
Oh, absolutely true. He's a good college running back, but Ohio State knew that PSU was going to try to lean on him because they're afraid to throw the ball.

And what did Andy Kotelnicki do? He did exactly what Ohio State expected: forced the run, and clearly showed he was afraid to call pass plays.

As you do when you're making $1.6 million a year as an offensive coordinator. "They know we don't trust the passing attack so... no point trying to surprise them by calling passing plays."

I'll take a shot at this
He mismanaged the roster
He recruited too heavy in some spots and too light on others
He was a horrible in game coach
He tried to fit square pegs into round holes with coordinating and talent
His teams lacked toughness and were soft
His defensive tackles were too small
He couldn't develop quarterbacks
He hired the worst wr coach in America then defended him
Again, the approach was always, "If we can get 2 or 3 premier skill guys on the team, that'll be enough to beat 9-10 of the opponents we face each year."

There was no comprehensive strategy to recruit and develop talent.

And we all see the results: it DID work as it was designed to-- we had a bunch of 9 and 10 win seasons. The problem is there's a clear ceiling to this approach when Ohio State and Oregon and Georgia and a handful of other programs are developing their talent all over the field.

and he would often say "we're not a good football team"

Which is another reason he was the best ever.

You always get further using a pool shark mentality. You always want your opponent, no matter what the sport or business situation, to underestimate you. One of Joe’s best lessons ever.

No question about the monsters, but they have to be mean monsters when playing the game. We can measure physical abilities, intellectual abilities, but we need a test for being NASTY when playing the greatest game of football. They cant be a "BFN" Big For Nothing. That's what we have now.

NIL is the devil in the details. Money ruins everything.
Unfortunately, @LB99 , can only give 1 like to your post.
IMO, CFB is now the days of MLB when Yankees (Red Sox and Dodgers) bought the best players to win championships. Championships go to the deepest pockets.

I recall Joseph Vincent Paterno once saying te first poll ranking teams should not come out until the second week of October. Had that been done this season, we would have seen that Texas, Penn State and Clemson were not 1, 2, and 4 respectively.
Especially Clemson for losing at home to Duke. Geez.

If you want to call Paterno the greatest “college football” (what it used to be) coach of his era, that’s fine. Saban is the best coach who coached in what we now call college football.
As much as I hate to say it, I completely agree.

A lot of “knowledgeable” football people were fooled by this years team. The Big 10 network crew thought the was one of the most talented teams in the country. Did they buy into what CJF was saying? How can former coaches and players be so wrong? For this team to collapse the way it did I get the sense there is more to the story that will eventually be revealed. IMHO.
My comments from a different thread

Good. Dabo to Bama. DeBoer to PSU.
Dream on... Dabo's approach doesn't work in this era, and based on how they continue to improve DeBoer might take Bama to the Natty Title game this season. PSU will be lucky to land a known commodity with all the other SEC openings and potentially more to come.

Only he wasn't the greatest ever, but stick with that delusion. It is fundamental to our failure.
Joe was a great coach because he took a team from virtually nothing to a NC contender and because he did it while following the rules (back when there were rules) and making sure that his players got a good education.

Saban was successful way before his NIL days. Going back to Mich St. and his LSU days

Saban went to the sec where he could cheat with impunity.
And Alabama to boot, which had cheating (bag money) down to a science, an administration committed to win, and boosters/donors who were insane about winning. Auburn has tried for years to match Alabama, and has only succeeded in becoming Bama's little brother. Bama is a machine, and tOSU over about the past decade or so has turned into one as well.

when joe would say that his team was not very good,he was REALLY saying that he needed another third team left guard!!!!!

IMO, if Knowles had not been hired, Franklin would likely still be the head coach at PSU. Hiring him was the decision that sealed his fate.

Knowles is great at what he does, but you won't see immediate results and there will probably be a temporary regression in performance as the players learn and adapt to the complex formations and unorthodox schemes that are integral to Knowles defense. It takes time for his strategy and approach to be implemented. There will be growing pains and mistakes.

Knowles is also not a good fit for all teams. IMO he was never a good fit for Penn State's roster. I think hiring him was an impulse decision on the part of Franklin and very little thought was given to any of this.

Saban and Paterno competed against each other 5 times....Paterno won 3 and Saban 2
That is not accurate. Paterno was 3-4 vs Saban. Paterno was 3-2 vs Saban at Michigan State and 0-2 vs Saban at Alabama. Saban was 4-1 in his last 5 games between the two schools against Paterno.

.
I read an article on Eleven Warriors a couple of months ago that said that OSU hasn't lost more than 2 games in a season (including Bowls) since 2011 - just mind-boggling. 2011 was the first tattoo gate penalty year when their roster took a hit with many of the star players bailing and Luke Fickell taking over for one year
