I think you might find teams with athletic guards as a bad matchup.

Your guards seem to struggle against athletic guards, especially with some size. However, your real strong point is tour front court and I think many, including you guys, are overlooking that in the name of your strong recruits.

Thornton I think might turn the corner and end up being the piece you guys really need to become elite. If he can become a point guard to space effectively it will make kennard and allen 10x better. Grayson excelled greatly with tyus and justice who could penetrate and space out the defense to key open looks.

If you get the ability to space that way again, your team is very capable of doing good things.

As a UNC fan, I am very well aware of how much a Point Guard can do or die a team. I think this situation may apply to your current team.

I am concerned somewhat about your team in relation to mine because I think you are very well represented inside which is our teams strength and your team can shoot 3s which our team is known to welcome, to our own expense.

I hope you guys continue to do well as I appreciate ACC RPI and how it helps pur teams in the conference, and you can attest to that saying if you look into the duke uk thread on the unc forums. As O said I wanted you guys to beat UK.

However, I do think the guards are your weak point now and look to see if that changes in the future.

You guys have a lot of room for improvement as well as I think UNC does also (we are not a number 1 team by being dominant but moreso because a lot of teams are just plain not on as a dominant level this year. And I fully expect us to be moreso in the 5--10 range this year).

I do hope you guys turn the corner because nothing is better than a strong UNC-Duke matchup. It is the greatest rivalry in college sports with OSU-Mich.

I wish you guys great improvement and luck until we meet!

Our guards have missed shots and made lazy passes, no one is giving us trouble except ourselves. Matt is playing great, and the others will improve. Athletic guards are the norm. We won't have problems forever.

Honestly, our guards isn't what concerns me at all.

Thornton is ahead of where I thought he'd be four games into the season. I think he's already turning the corner. Grayson was brutal against UK but really bounced back last night. He showed adept drives to the basket, a mid-range game, and the ability to hit the three. Matt, as already mentioned, has been terrific. Lastly, Luke will find it. Even when he's missing that shot looks pure. And you can tell K isn't worried either having him in there at crucial times.

Where I have more concern, and it was on display last night, is in fact, with our bigs. And don't take that the wrong way.....they've been outstanding. But, neither Marshall or Amile are back to the basket players. Last evening we saw on the perimeter a lot of dribbling and standing around....then the guards being forced to make something happen.

What I'd like to see is Brandon posting up more. He's shown the ability to be a deft passer and it utilizes his length advantage on defenders. I think it especially rings true tomorrow against Georgetown, who tends to run three and four guards at times.

So if we have trouble with athletic guards @imajericho is basically saying we will beat cryolina two maybe three times? That's good with me!

I agree with most of your post. Due to start times, I got most of the first half last night and some 2nd during our halftime. Your G's and Ingram looked much more ready last night than Tue. IMO, I like Thornton on the floor more, seems to make Grayson better.

Against a good team, Duke seemed more focused last night while we seemed to be sleep walking too often. (let down after a big game, maybe) ..........Freshmen.........

I agree with DJ. Our offense was so awesome last year in big part of what Jah's scoring did for our team, not talking about the points being put up. It opened up pass lanes, gave space for the perimeter, drew in double teams. That made life for our guards much easier.

Well now where is our scoring from the frontcourt at? As the season progresses, it will be imperative that we look for Amile and even Marshall to get some offense. It might be tough sometimes but it needs to happen. Otherwise all the focus will go to our perimeter players and it will APPEAR that they struggle because they aren't all that great, but really defense hones on them, with no relief valve.

So in short, unless our front-line can score for us some in the future, our offense will struggle to find a comfortable rhythm.

Marshall isn't a post up scorer. So I know what would happen if we pounded the ball in to him. His points are going to come on the offensive glass and on the backside when one of our guards gets a defender to come to them.

Amile is better than he was and can create opportunities for himself....but he's better in spacing and even moreso facing up.

Scoring with their back to the basket, our two best are probably Brandon and Chase. While Marshall and Amile have their obvious strengths, scoring with their back to the basket isn't one of them.

Was actually hoping to see some of Chase last night for some looks on offense, but no dice.

Spacing hasn't been great and prolly never will be, especially compared to last season. I actually think the biggest concerns might be on the D end. Weak side help etc etc.

Imajerico a big shout out to you for analyzing Dukes woes. We now know what to look for when we watch them play. Just a suggestion but you might want to analyze you own team after your NI loss today.

Aw, I'm going to cut the OP a little slack. Thanks, OP. That's a sincere, polite take. I agree more w/ dj, though. Yes, our post has been more consistent in some ways. They're seniors and we've played just 4 games. In today's game, though, seniors are often guys who are still around b/c they are what they are, especially post players. They've been savvy and opportunistic so far, but while our backcourt and young guys are showing some growing or/and adjustment issues, we're going to need something more reliable out of our post players to go as far as we can this year. In 2010, for example, our 3 backcourt players were a senior and 2 juniors, and exceptionally good. Our 2 frontcourt starters were senior role players, but Zoubs was like, the 2nd best offensive rebounder in the country by some measure. So we don't need our frontcourt players to be our dominating scorers or anything, but we are going to need them to be high level consistent and reliable. It's kind of a moot point if we don't get some dominating play from our backcourt, but that's a little more within the realm of likelihood.

Spacing could prove to be an issue against man to man, but Ingram is taylor made for flashing to the foul line against zone defenses. Hopefully Thornton's continual improvement makes tough perimeter D less of an issue moving forward, not to mention Luke eventually making shots that he is capable of.

Some of you guys too harsh on the OP. He started a civil and intelligent conversation. OK to disagree on some or all of the points. No need for personal attacks.

Yeah we need to follow the guys over at THR and be a kind and gentler board. I am ashamed of some of you. Haven't you learned anything from me or dirt. :D OFC

Maybe I miss rememberd but I'm pretty sure this guy is a genuine D bag over at Gary's world.

If I'm mistaken and the OP is a genuine post, I apologize a little bit but it's still pretty damn good that a Cheat fan is "genuinely" concerned with Duke keeping up in the Rivalry hahahahaha

He was pretty diplomatic, I thought. There may have been a backhanded compliment or two in there, but I think some on this board are way too sensitive. We make fun of THR, but yet we want to treat guests the same way? Makes no sense to me, but whatever.

It wasn't that flaming of a post, but saying that hopefully Duke turns the corner for the sake of the Duke-UNC matchup is laughable. What has UNC done against Duke without Hansbrough and Lawson? Also, maybe not the best idea to come to your rivals' board pointing out their flaws while your team just sucked it up against UNI. Last I checked, they're not quite the same team that upset Kansas during Duke's run to the championship in 2010. Lastly, if someone from this board had gone to THR and posted something anywhere close to this, the thread probably gets shut down. I think while posters may be coming down hard on the OP, at least this thread is still going on.

I don't think he was being diplomatic but I do think he chose his words carefully. Why should we give a crap what a Tarhole's opinion is of our team unless they want to say we are the far superior program to theirs. He had a great time pointing out our flaws but we all have enough sense to do that ourselves. Like someone already said, if we posted something similar on THR the thread would be locked or we would get a tombstone if we didn't already have one.

There's always a hidden poke at our team in his post. He hides it well but it's there. He stays within our mods lines very well but he gets his cheap shots in that look clean but still cheap. Very clever poster. Reminds me of Smooth As Butter a little bit. OFC

I've been waiting on pins and needles for a unc fan to stop in and let us know what's wrong with our team.
