Daughter and son-in-law moved to Evanston, IL last summer. House they bought needed some TLC, and the back yard lawn was bereft of grass. They planned to reseed the back yard this spring when the time is right ... however, with the rain & snow they've had, their back yard is now a mud pit (they have a puppy and 2 little kids). Wondering if anyone has any ideas or expertise in how to reduce (dry up) the mud until they have a chance to put grass on it.

IrishHerb I wish I knew. Am about 45 minutes NW of Evanston and this is a brutal time of year. Nice to have the warm-up, but better to stay frozen for Fonzie and his backyard adventures. Pray for no rain!

Make it a family fun event. Pretend the backyard is Wrigley field and buy a giant tarp. On Sunny days leave it rolled up. At the first sign of inclement weather everyone runs outside and participates in the spreading out process. They can even time themselves to monitor progress and group effectiveness.

If they are having trouble growing grass then the soil may be waterlogged due to poor drainage. Sounds like they might need a drain system. Have a landscape guy take a look.

They just moved in last summer. Back yard was covered with leaves, which I think explains the lack of grass. Drainage might be a problem too, I’ll tell them to check.

They just moved in last summer. Back yard was covered with leaves, which I think explains the lack of grass. Drainage might be a problem too, I’ll tell them to check.

Real simple thing to do is get a post hole digger and dig a hole a few feet into the ground. If the soil comes up dry then it’s not really a drainage issue. They should go at least four feet into the ground. Wait for a time that there is no precipitation. .

Yeah, this time of year, with our weather pattern, it might be frozen a few inches down preventing drainage.

Make sure they are far away from any underground pipes as their root systems seek water and will clog pipes.

This morning’s rain must have made it 10x worse. Willows are fast growing, but a little dirty and relatively fast dying. And can get huge.
