I agree nipit. Since Plan B was not passed I think the school could stay open for years to come. They really need the redistricting thing to happen and get the enrollment back up. It could be a great opportunity for a young coach to get his feet wet. Great facility. I think the fans will be back this fall with some new energy and hope.

Buddy you guys had 410 kids last year. Even if you don't get any more kids that's enough to win with. Hope to play you guys this year. Don't think we have ever played.

BK13T. I'm hearing that we have only 325 at the present. Lost more than I thought during the open enrollment last summer. That's why we need redistricting. Also no head coach and no prospects of getting one. It's going to be tough to field a quality team. But we shall see. Would also like to play the Black Knights. Hope it happens.

I hate to be the prophet of gloom and doom, but until the school system is better funded, I can't see how the prospect of closing schools is not going to continue to come up. The new board members got in on promises, but without a plan of how to keep them. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

One more thing we need to keep our eye on...Poole, Gibson, McIntyre, Crump and Watson are almost assured (barring a write-in campaign) of coming on the BOE in December. Poole spent a lot of time promising Albemarle residents that he is against closings. This is the same Poole who has fought redistricting, fought middle schools, and just generally fought any kind of progress or change in schools for the past 20 years. Watson is not as vocal, but has always voted with Poole. Add the other three candidates coming on the board and you have a majority. Crump is the only one I have any faith in, and it's because I've known her a long time. But she's only one vote.

As much as Poole and Watson have opposed change in the past, I fear that any redistricting done by the current board will be instantly reversed once they are sworn in (provided the other three vote with them) On top of that, you don't need to look very far back in history to see that Poole and Watson generally opposed anything that benefited Albemarle during their previous BOE terms.

Based on this, if lack of funding results in this new board being faced with a "we must close a school" situation, I think AHS would be the one they would put on the chopping block. Once again, I hope I'm wrong, but as the old saying goes, "If we fail to learn from our history, we are doomed to repeat it."

Stanly county will lose 700k in funding from the state next year because of less students. Poole has a history of wanting to eliminate local teaching and coaching suppliments. Since the voters decided not to close schools, but also not fund schools at the same time, the situation is not very attractive for coaches.
There has to be some sort of sign of stability on the horizon to keep and attract teachers and coaches.

The voters don't want to hear about the problems with the schools. They prefer to save a dime of tax when they buy $40 worth of merchandise. The Stanly County voters have really screwed themselves to the ground, and those idiots who voted against the tax measure AND voted for Melvin Poole shouldn't complain whatsoever when the schools go right down the toilet.

AHS is 355 or 365 on the latest ADM that was noted by the BOE. Started the year with 411. Schools normally lose students through the school year but they have lost over 10% which is high.

OK, this question is off-topic, but it's worth considering.

If you are serving in an elected capacity, what is your responsibility? Do you:
  • Vote the way the majority of your constituents want you to vote? Or do you...
  • Vote the way you personally feel is best?
Granted, in a perfect world the representative and constituents will be in agreement. But in the real world, that's not always the case.

We are seeing this here in good ol' Stanly County now. In the last election, a group of board members ran on a platform of changing / improving the schools. They did NOT run on a platform of closing some or any schools, only on improving SCS. They were elected (and by a significant margin, if I remember correctly). Upon study, the board members determined that the appropriate course of action to bring about improvement was to close some schools and consolidate to save money. Many of the same people who had voted for change / improvement cried foul once closures were even mentioned, and the cries of "vote 'em out" and "they are not voting the will of the people" went up.

SC residents voted for change in the schools. They got what they voted for. Now they are upset that they got it.

Who's in the wrong? Who's in the right? And how can you tell?

The biggest issue I am seeing that the "I want it better for all students unless it affects me" sentiment is playing out big.

I want my car to be red but my parents know the cops write more tickets in red cars so they get a white one for me. I am pissed but am I better off for getting the white car? I do not know that I am but if I had the red one I may have some serious problems. I see this situation the same way.

If I elect someone to office I personally feel I am putting my faith in them to do what I expect is best for the community as a whole.

You gotta have a tough group to win when you have less than 350 kids.

....and Plymouth proved that last year when they easily defeated Robbinsville. In the first quarter Plymouth got into the heads of the Robbinsville players...which is a key if you want to compete with so few kids.

What does WRH have to do with it. NC has 8 classes for the playoffs. Who cares if ALL the other 7 classes could beat us. We only worry about our class.

We never had a chance? Lol.
We had the ball with two minute remaining and down by 8. Listen to what your saying. We was picked to finish third in SMC but e went to state and lost by eight! You can say what you want but that is a fact

Nope, you never had a chance. Plymouth won fairly handily.

Has anyone put in the Albemarle HC position yet? I see some Albemarle players training at the Y on their own. Even with that, I'd be surprised if Albemarle wins 2 games this year.

To go forward, they should look back. The train wreck last year didn't seem to be enjoyed by anyone. I hope they don't repeat 2015. Hire the coach early! Give him a chance to find some help. (I didn't say hire some help...we know the help will come from the community because there will not be positions open.) They might benefit from asking a former coach to reconsider returning. I think they have one still on campus...

What former Coach would that be? I don't even think Baxter can fix this train wreck... and I hope you don't have "General Larry Platt" in mind! lmao!

You'll need engineers from the DOD to fix this wreckage lol JK. Albemarle has some pretty decent talent coming up though, hope they can make it exciting...

Not that far back.... Just saying two years ago, the team was fine...it was the eligibility form that was messed up. Maybe they should look back at the situation and find a fix. It is just my opinion.

Baseball has gone to crap as well. All their top players went to N Stanly during the open transfer last year. The only game they've won is barely beating Graystone. The other games have been ugly; multiple run losses.

There is a top assistant coach that has one year of HC experience that is very interested based on second hand info I have received. He has a couple of state championship rings at the highest level, played in college, is young, and would be the exact perfect type of individual to get the most out of the players. OK, he is probably not a viable candidate for the administration but there is once again an excellent option available. Hopefully they do a better job this year than last year when the same type of candidate presented itself.

I hear the BOE decision to close Oakboro has changed.

I haven't heard about their change in plans about Oakboro unless they changed their minds after the restraining order and injunction was filed by the BOE primary winners and the mayor of Oakboro and their commissioners.

You should relax.

Albemarle is much more like Plymouth than Robbinsville. Both schools have won multiple state championships over the past 20 years. Robbinsville has done fine the past two years but have often been the 3rd wheel in the SMC. I have immense respect for Swain and Murphy which are two programs willing to work hard and leave it all on the field.

They had the opportunity to bring in a good coach last year but my a terrible and I mean terrible decision. The motto in Stanly County is "If your not from Stanly County we don't want any"... There will be no outsiders coming in Tango even though that's what this back water county needs; and I mean someone from Ohio or New York or something.

I am hearing that a former HFC at another Stanly County school has applied. IMO, he was not given much of a chance at his former school.

What kind of talent coming in from the middle school, sway?

Because the 7th and 8th grades are mixed, it's hard to tell unless you personally know the kids. They have a very good running back really athletic and nice size, could start on varsity as a DB. No T.A.'s or Davis's nor 1992-2004 type talent coming in lol! But with a good coach they could be in the middle of the conference.
