We know they are there. Nothing to see here. Just another civilization living their lives millions of light years away.

If I'm understanding it correctly, the images they're observing would be about 1500 years old. Which, in my mind, can mean only one of two things:

1. The aliens managed to blow themselves up centuries ago, or
2. They'll be arriving at our fair planet any minute.

If they created their own little world floating around a star chances are they could get here whenever they wanted to

Are you saying they don't want to come here?

THEY'RE ALREADY HERE????

HUMANS ARE CAPTIVES OF A SUPERIOR ALIEN RACE REALITY AS WE KNOW IT IS A COMPUTER SIMULATION AND OUR OFFSPRING ARE BEING HARVESTED AS A FUEL SCOURCE BURNED UP BABIES????!?!?!?!??!?

MD55- it's either comet dust or type 2 civilization.

Either one is interesting, but one of them is more interesting than the other.

Good points. But you know us humans. We imply that mole hills are mountains.
Another thought I read on this. What if it is a built structure, but the beings who built it weren't sentient. Hmmm

So does that mean it is not the mother ship with a bazillion little willys on it ? Shame. Could have been fun.

So they say, Willie. But I have a hard time accepting those are the only options, given our incredibly small amount of information about how things work that far out into space and the incredibly small amount of data to work with. In another story I read, they started out thinking it could be everything from a smudge on the telescope to a glitch in the computer storing the data.

Even if you can eliminate those kinds of prosaic explanations it is still a pretty big leap to a giant array of solar panels linked to a structure millions of miles around at its circumference. That's a pretty big government works contract for any civilization. Can you imagine the kick backs and the no-show jobs and the contributions to the "foundation" of the Supreme Ruler's family it took to get a slice of that pie? Not to mention any civilization capable of building such a structure should have moved beyond "Solyndra" level technology -- hell, that doesn't even work on Earth except to generate political payola.
I agree that we cant induce that its aliens, but its neat to think about.

I think Willy was refering to Michio Kaku's theory of advanced civilizations. It is based off their energy useage.

Theoretically, a type 1 (if I remember this correctly) harness all the power of their planet. (we are currently considered 0, because we dont do this)
Type 2 harness the sun's energy
Type 3 harness the galaxies energy.

I doubt we could recognize a type 2, but interesting enough.

I certainly agree it is interesting to contemplate.

I note, with skepticism, that we are always evaluating potential alien technology through the prism of our immediate technological attainments. For example, in the late 19th-early 20th centuries when astronomers thought they picked up intelligent design in lines on Mars, they were interpreted as "irrigation canals" -- not coincidentally what was happening in many places on earth. I can remember in my boyhood, in the 1960s and 1970s, inferences drawn about the potential to detect nuclear energy use or radio wave dispersal from nearby stars. Now, when there is some possible structure around a distant star, its potentially a solar panel array -- right out of the Global Warming playbook! (Wouldn't it suck to discover some vast, complex alien civilization was using coal in gigantic quantities, mined in their version of Appalachia? How Retrograde!)

That's not a political comment on my part, its an observation about how totally limited our human power to imagine anything outside the context of our world really is.

LEK- better explained it for me.

I agree man. That's where I start thinking about the Fermi's Paradox and the Great Barrier.

If we get past the Great Barrier of nuclear power, we we will keep continuing towards these Types of civilizations. Yet, we can only comprehend what's within our context of reality. With Quantum Physics and potential AI, we may not need to rely on our imagination, we'll have mechanisms in place to do it for us. Maybe we are almost cashed out as a species. Looking at the state of the people of this world, I'd say so. We're just too emotional to do anything extra special.

Is there enough raw materials on earth to build an object that is millions of miles in diameter?

Either they come from a giant planet, or multiple planets to get that much raw materials.

Maybe they can convert energy in solid materials, which means they are too smart for solar energy.

Maybe it's a space-station super 8 motel for the weary interstellar travelers or maybe a space age truck stop.

If Captain Kirk and the Enterprise didn't visit then it doesn't exist.

Somebody needs to radio them a KJ Bible ASAP!

Do you think the Rapture happens simultaneously?

What if the Light Years from another planet are from the Rapture that hasn't reached here yet?

Does Jesus kill everything in the Universe at once?

That is the question.

What if our alien overlords lactate out of their anuses and poop out of their nipples? Imagine how confusing Earth would be to them.

*Marvin picks up some late night Cinemax*
"Dude, wtf? We need to exterminate those pervs ASAP"
