An Awful Day

The Waterboy summed up well, in his thread below, the impact that Bob Cox (aka Far East Wildcat) had on us. At some point I'll write about the impact that Bob had on Northwestern in general-- it's a hell of a lot more than just his support for the football program.

Bob was a great friend, and he is already deeply missed. My condolences to his wife, Gail, and their two children.

Bob could be a very serious, studious person. He was also, however, a truly funny and joyful person. He showed that side when we did our little "'Cat Nips" videos.

I thought the Rivals NU community might get a kick out of the linked video below. I put this set of clips together after we did our first 'Cat Nips season in 2014. At the time, I made this just for Bob, a private joke for us, not to be shared on my site. I don't think he'd mind if I share it now. It's goofy, and it's fun, and it's how I'll remember Bob Cox.

Truly an awful day. Bob had a truly loving heart. He cared not only about Northwestern and Northwestern football, but all of us. Though I never got to spend a lot of time with him, I enjoyed every email, phone call, drink and meal we had together.
I hope some day when I pass, I’ll see Bob standing with Randy Walker and Air Willie at the stern of the Pickleboat.
God bless you, Bob Cox. You are a gem. Our thoughts and prayers to Gail and the kids.

This year has evidenced to me that life passes far too quickly, that good health can be ephemeral, and that accumulating years means saying goodbye to others we hold dear.

Definitely a sad day and thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Gail and the two children. Pulled up a few photos from the archives to remind of Bob as a great friend and Wildcat fan.

Although we saw each other on several later occasions - usually homecoming at Northwestern, this photo from the NU Alumni Tailgate at the CAL game is the most recent picture I could locate.

Life is way too short and just isn’t fair sometimes. I didn’t know Bob, but my love goes out to his family. We lost a good one.

Despite the mishaps depicted in the out takes, it was mentioned that a 6-7 team that loses in the conference championship is not eligible for a bowl.

NU was thus vulnerable, when they were 6-1 with 2 games left, to lose bowl eligibility, In fact those 2 games were important and resting players, as suggested by many, could have been problematic

OK, with some searching I was able to locate a FEW additional photos. Most of these predate WildcatReport. These first two were in conjunction with a dinner hosted by Waterboy, FarEastWildcat, and GoUPurple as a consequence of a NGN Auction win. Also present was my son who was a student athlete on the Northwestern Wrestling Team and several additional invited guests.

And speaking of NGN Auctions, the next photo is FarEastWildcat conferring with Jean Yale who subsequently retired in 2014 from her position that included organizing the auctions. Accompanying it is another photo taken on the same occasion.

The final photo(s) include one of FarEastWildcat at the Sun Bowl with another Northwestern fan, presumably discussing potholes in the West Parking Lot.

Condolences to the FEW family. FEW was instrumental in creating an on-line family for the Cat obsessed and nurturing relationships when the clan gathered at home and away games. Those were the days before bowl games were a pre-ordained event. He was funny, gracious and an astute observer of the Wildcat culture.
Hope those of us lucky enough to make it to San Diego lift several Libations in his memory.
