DP, it’s heartbreaking to see this junk continue to go on everyday in our beloved city. Feels like nothing is being done about this nonsense. Where’s all the marching, hootin and hollering, and uproar over these senseless acts of violence in RVA? Some may call it extreme but it’s time that the sad excuse of city government in Richmond sends in the National Guard. It is a war zone of violence and it’s simply not safe. For those interested, check out Jon Burkett CBS6 on Facebook. There has been a homicide or shooting damn near everyday since the start of the year. Sad times in Richmond. We need real leaders in the home and in our communities. It starts at home.

I moved to Richmond in 1985. The crack wars of late 80's early 90' pushed the murder rate higher than it is now. West Broad and Grace west of Belvidere were simply vile places. There was a large homeless encampment in Scott's Addition.

What's really not sitting right with me is this didn't even happen in a neighborhood really. So they took whatever issue they was having and it took it to a very open and public place. It's crazy.

One of the stars from GW’s 1982 state championship team, Mike Brim was killed in a shootout in Forest Hills park in 2005. He played 8 years in the NFL.
When we lived in Chesterfield Village, the Southside strangler murdered a girl about yards from where we were sleeping one Saturday night.

It’s a bit of a cliche, but “you become who you associate with.” It’s often misunderstood. It doesn’t mean you ignore your troubled friends and associates. Absolutely you don’t do that. But, you do have to be wise, or you can easily become collateral damage. This is fairly easy for us adults to understand, but the teenager brain is blind to this concept.

It boils down to there’s not enough leaders any more. We need more fathers in the home and more real men in the communities molding these young men. Monkey see, monkey do with this generation.
When I complement a parent on their kid, I always point out that their kid turned out good, not because momma or daddy told them to be good, but because they showed them how to be good. It’s all about the example they set.
