So as I’m sitting here with @hollandnucat watching the bucs blow out the eagles we decided to celebrate the win against MSU why not bring back our player analysis. It was decently well received the last couple times we posted this. We will break down general strengths and weakness and areas to improve for the players.

Buie
Strengths- Takes care of the basketball. Can break defenses down off dribble. Good passer. Has become a solid defender. Good at drawing fouls. Very good with changes of direction.
Weakness- Inconsistent shooting. Sometimes bad shot selection. Try’s to do too much and make too flashy of a play at times.
Development- needs to work on consistency and not forcing things.

Audige
Strengths- Very good on ball and perimeter defender. Good help defender. Very active hands on defense. High motor. Hits the boards well for a guard. Can create for himself off the dribble. Good fast break finisher. Good mid range game.
Weakness- Poor shot selection at times. A bit of tunnel vision on offense. Doesn’t see the court as well as he should.
Devlopment- Needs to play within the offense more similar to his game against MSU. Work on court vision and decision making with pass/shot selection.

Berry
Strengths- nice range and pretty jump shot when on. Good defender with active hands. Doesn’t generally force shots or try to do too much.
Weakness- Needs to be consistent of a shooter. finishing on fast breaks and around the rim is an area of concern. Not great off the dribble
Development- Get stronger. Work on finishing around the rim. Work on consistent shooting. Work at moving without the ball to increase clean looks and shot creation.

Beran
Strengths- Good defender. Good help defender. Good shot blocker. Good looking jump shot. Very athletic. Shows lots potential offensively.
Weakness- Dissapers offensively. Needs to be more aggressive. Post play as he struggles to post up smaller defenders. Needs to be stronger with the ball offensively.
Development Strength. Post play. Aggressiveness. Consistency. Needs to take his big defenders off the dribble more as he tends to be more athletic and his smaller defenders in the post as he tends to be bigger/taller.

Nance
Strengths- Good all around game. Good shooter, rebounder, defender, passer. Excellent help defender. Good shot blocker. Good court vision and can put the ball on the court.
Weakness- not as aggressive as he should be and disappears at times.
Development- Be a more aggressive offensive player. Get better off the dribble. Be consistent.

Young
Strengths- Great footwork in the post. Good touch around the rim. Good court vision and passer. Developed a left a hand. Decent post defender. Consistent and can get offensive rebounds at times due to high motor.
Weakness- struggles defending versatile big men due to lack of quickness. Not a good help defender. Can get out rebounded on the defensive glass.
Development- Hard to come up with development with him because he seems to get the most out of his athletic abilities.

To be continued if wanted for rest of lineup. Apologies for any typos as this was typed out on a cell phone.

There’s nothing Young can do to increase his vertical even just a little?

Nice analysis.
One disagreement as to Boo. His play has improved greatly with much better decision making & shot selection.
Would still suggest his on ball defense and ability to step up and disrupt the opponent’s offense is still a work in process.

My one grip about Young...he needs to work on finishing around the rim. Too many of his close-in shots roll off.

One add for Berry: FT shooting. He is a sub-0.600 shooter for his short career. Needs to be much better.

Hello, I come in peace and in search of knowledge. I very much enjoyed what happened in EL, and am uber-impressed you did it w/o Nance.

I notice that virtually all of these players are listed as good at defense, but the team defensive efficiency numbers in the analytics are in the bottom third of the B1G. I also see that you are 318th in free throw rate allowed, which may explain part of why the team numbers aren't elite. I did see there were threads devoted to ref bias against the Cats (and I thought they certainly were in the last 30 seconds on Sat., but I digress), but generally, I don't think that's true over the course of an entire season. Anyway, I think defense is hard to objectively evaluate individually - it's more subjective at that level. At the team level, there are better metrics.

I didn't know the stats, but by the eyeball test, our free throw defense has really regressed over the past few year. It's so bad that when we finally got to Chick-Filet numbers last game, the stadium staff was so shocked, they weren't prepared for the give-away. We've got plenty of things to work on in practice, but I'd think Coach Collins could spare at least a few minutes each practice for free throw defense.

Perhaps my sarcasm and comprehension meters broke, but I didn't mean FT% (which of course has no defense). I meant the relative rate at which you send opponents to the line - that's the number that isn't good.

Yeah, my reply was sarcasm. We used to joke on this board years ago about having the best free throw defense in the league. Hey, we've got to be good at Something.

Appreciate your post. I believe ref bias does happen at all levels. Bigger named programs and players tend to get more calls than lesser. I agree more athletic and aggressive offensive teams draw more fouls as they are driving the ball to the hole versus jump shots.

Defensively Northwestern is 12th in the country in turn over margin and 32nd in Defensive FG%. I think these are signs of a good defensive team.

Good, fair and balance scouting reporting without the usual BS. Almost required reading.

I'd just add a couple items.

Buie - I'd say a weak defender and poor shot selection also.
Audige - I'd mention that back problem. It's obviously an issue and has probably turned his mediocre three-point shot into an awful option.
Berry - Very prone to foul trouble.
Nance - Along with Buie often gets too involved in the two-man game and ignores the other three on the court.
Young - Sorry Holland guys, but I strongly disagree with good touch around the rim. I'd replace that with a weakness - misses too much within three feet. Also, too easy to defend those scoop shots. But you're right: Gets as much as he can out of that skill set.

I personally believe most of our players are decent individual defenders. But we have brain farts over and over again. We overhelp where it's not needed, etc, etc. Extreme example was the game in Columbus, where we allowed 95 points and failed to pay attention to a little known guy.

The constant switching we do in man-to-man can yield massive mismatches and occasional open men. In the MSU game, the switching worked a lot better than in other games and Sparty missed a few open 3s. If we can switch like this for the rest of the year, things will head in a positive direction.
