kind of a shame. Mad Mex was a great spot just off the main drag to grab a bite to eat, and something to drink. And in the spring, summer, and fall, it was a great place to eat outdoors.

Kind of seemed to be a possibility when there was news earlier this year that some developers had made an offer on the Days Inn on Pugh Street.

Hope they come back. If you’ve never tried their Southwestern Wings, do yourself a favor and order a couple baskets. Fan-friggin-tastic!!

Is it too soon to storm the mustard castle and burn it down?

For the record, La Bamba had very good, simple food. Always liked how if you ordered guac on something, they would just scoop out some avocado straight on your burrito, torts, etc. Plus, who does’t love horchata?

I was never there so it doesn't matter one bit.

Just what State College needs, more expensive high rise apartments.
There are 2 under construction currently. One where the Garden House Apts and Eddie's Bicyles was, and another on West College at the split with Beaver(across from where O.W. Houts was). The thing is, all these new highrises have empty space at the bottom and no one is moving in. With the problem of finding help, many places downtown are closed in the evenings and non-football weekends.

Sucks that the hotel is going too. It wasn't by any means luxury but is centrally located and within walking distance to just about anything and also pet friendly which is important to me. Me and my wife stayed many times over the last few years while "Christmas Shopping" at The Skeller, Cafe, Saloon, among others. It's a great trip while most kids are home for break.

Sad to see Mad Mex go but this is really adding to the dearth of hotel rooms downtown.

It's so depressing every time I go back and more high rises have sprung up.

It's not some much as trouble finding help why all the retail space is open. Look around downtown, there is lots of retail space open in the legacy buildings too. The rents make opening downtown prohibitive at this time. Over the years, it seems to go in cycles. Rents get high, no businesses. They lower rent and they move in. Raise them again and out they go. Look outside of downtown and look how many businesses either had places downtown or started downtown and they got out. Sad.

Always stayed at the Days Inn in the summer months...played golf at Toftrees, have a beer there, then Pickles, The Skeller, Primantis and dinner at The Corner Room. Great times. Didn't eat at The Tavern, didn't want to run into Neuheisel!

I've never stayed there but it's an awesome location very close to where I lived. Oh well.

There has to be a real estate bubble in State College. All of the development is not justified by higher enrollment. It could be really ugly when it pops.

The several years of road construction on North Atherton street killed many of the stores on that side of town. Now they started major road construction on South Atherton for the next several years. That real estate bubble may burst sooner than expected if businesses start closing on that side of town in the near future.

Just curious…have you been engaged in the annual student housing rat race recently? Having just done through it with my freshman daughter, I can tell you definitively that there is extremely high demand for those new high rise apartment buildings which are demanding top dollar. And, their prominence has required every other property owner in town to invest in their buildings resulting in better property choices all around. Do I personally like the price points? Absolutely not. But that is where the market is and nobody is balking.

I've seen some of your other restaurant reviews and am impressed. Unofficial MacAndrew Board State College Food Critic?

Mad Mex RIP. Close to almost as good as the one in Oakland. Big Azz Margarita pure ambrosia. Lived right down Pugh Street and it was home away from home.

I was looking at the space available right next door to jack harper on college and was going to put a breakfast lunch concept there but instead it is going to be another fast food chain. Raising canes. I am disappointed to say the least.

I always thought that if you had a place that delivers breakfast, you could have a pretty good business in a college town. So, you can pre-order your breakfast the night before, with a delivery time. And a hot breakfast would be delivered to you.

Of course, I had that idea in 1986, when only Domino's was delivering regularly in State College and it was "out of the box thinking".

I couldn't tell you how many times I had Domino's for breakfast at PSU. 🤷‍♂️

Tom in regards to restaurants in State College.....I think it would be appropriate to post the CDT article on the passing of Pat Daugherty who was the long time owner of the Tavern. Pat was a huge supporter of PSU and State College. Pat was the nephew of former Michigan State football coach Duffy Daugherty. The passing of Pat is a huge loss to the community......he was a Gem of a Man.

Apologies if I missed that this has already been posted........I would post the thread........but I'm really not that smart.

I thought somebody posted about it, but I can't remember if it was on this board or the Lions Den, or if I'm just recalling seeing it as I was looking through some of the newspapers that cover PSU. Thanks for the post.

Three major student constructions going now at the Beaver/College split, East College at the old trailer park site, and dwntwn on East College. The Days Inn rehab will make it a fourth. Clearly, with few exceptions, the university has taken over the College Ave/Beaver Ave area and dwntwn will be a true college town with very few places for adults to enjoy. The demand will always be high as long as the enrollment remains the same or increases which is expected to happen over the next 10 years. Expect it to get to 50-55,000 by 2030. Even hotels are folding up with Days Inn, NLI, and a few others rumored to be converted, torn down, or completely reimagined. I've heard of several hotel projects but almost all are no bigger than 125 rooms and no or very limited conference space. Heck the University is studying what to do with the NLI and Penn Stater. On their AD Strategic Plan they released several years ago there was a hotel at the old visitor center site which is now athletic offices.

As far as the apparent reduction in hotel rooms, does any of that have to do with AirBnB, VRBO or similar choices? Thereby reducing the need for an actual hotel for people to stay?

Raising Canes chicken is going in that space.

That and the San Francisco sauce. I used to go there ever Thur or Fri in the summer for Happy Hour. My wife and I could split 14 wings at half off for like $6. It was the best deal in town when you add in half off beer. Long live Mad Mex.
