Any cyclists out there?

Here, close to home, I ride either bike lanes or sidewalks. Sidewalk riding in Austin is permissible everywhere except the 6th street area downtown. 75% of my daily commute is conducted on streets with dedicated bike lanes.

When visiting back home and cycling from one community to another, for example Knoxville to Harrogate, I always recon the route before riding. Adequate prep is critical.

Some folks, like me, choose commuting by bike for both health and monetary reasons.

Since the League of American Bicyclists considers KY 49th out of 50 for cycle friendliness, so much repeated hostility targeting cyclists, particular on this forum, is indeed understandable.

I can understand a lot of that. Bikes can be very useful in a metro area. You can scream through standing still traffic, etc. And, cars aren't moving at break-neck speed. And certainly if I lived closer to work, I'd bike on occasion.

What I was mostly referring to are the recreational cyclists. For example, on Old Richmond Road. It's a 2-lane road with ditches for shoulders. Curvy.....with some blind curves, blind side-streets, etc. Half the cars drive 40 mph, the other half 60 mph......lots of traffic during certain times of the day. Now, it is a pretty ride through the countryside, but if I were biking I'd stay more on the side streets through the country where traffic is much less.

I have to ride through downtown to make it to the trail, which admittedly isn't ideal, but as long as I stay in bike lanes and follow traffic laws I don't see a big issue.

Would like a nice cycling thread though. What about my dood Peter Sagan's performance at Worlds? Dude is a FREAK. Just amazing. He was pumping a ridiculous gear up 18% cobbles. LOL. 99% of us would just fall over if we tried that. This dude is doing 20MPH and no telling what kind of wattage.

Really wish I would have went to Richmond.
Peter Sagan is one the most exciting athletes in the world, not only is he superhuman he puts on quite a show. Most great cyclist are pretty robotic, he has rockstar charisma, and will probably pull off those white shorts next year.

If Old Richmond Rd (US 25) is anything like I remember, it is highly doubtful I'd ride the stretch without paved shoulders.

It's a popular stretch right there b/c it gets you headed out towards the only hills in the Lex area. I don't like riding it at all. I've rode it but only early on a weekend.

I find that when I'm on a bike, pedestrians are the worst. Always getting in the bike lanes, walking 3-4 across, NEVER looking when crossing a road/bike path. The worst.

But then, when I'm in a car, I think bikers are the worst. Breaking traffic laws, slowing down traffic. The worst.

Honestly, the worst are the bikers who insist on riding 2 or more across. Makes it so difficult to pass. HATE these folks. Oh, and rollerbladers all deserve to die. 1 person, looking like an idiot, somehow taking up the space of 3 bikes.

I let my dog poop on my neighbor's lawn, too, but you don't hear me bragging about it.

It's really not bragging, just doing my part as a model citizen. I will admit that while driving home last week on Va Beach Blvd, I let my anger take over and pinged a cyclist with an aluminum hot dog wrapper. I felt so bad that I left early for work the next morning searching for it but to no avail.

I will give a big shout out to THE Virginia Beach Sanitation Department. Nothing but kudos to the men and women who do their part to keep the world clean and green.
