at the Palace tonight. It’s truly a mixed bag for me. I guess I’m going so I can say I had the privilege of hearing him perform Pet Sounds live. On the other hand he’s getting on up there and doesn’t appear to have the constitution of his current performing contemporaries like Paul McCartney or Elton John. Still, not a bad way to waste a Friday night, as a fan of his work. Best of luck to me getting there early enough from Lexington to find good parking.

I've watched him 'live' on TV/Video and it's kind of sad. It's like watching a robot sing like Brian Wilson. He usually surrounds himself with very good musicians, so it should be a good show.

Pet sounds is one of the greatest albums ever, and Brian Wilson is a musical genius. Having said that, We went to see him down here and he can't sing well at all anymore. Band was pretty good, but he was kind of pathetic actually

I will say McCartney still puts on one hell of a show, and I was forced as a family engagement to go see Frankie Valli who was still impressive with his vocal range (which did NOT make up for the homo erotic presentation of his new boy band backing him). The Who was less than ideal but still worth seeing a few beers ago. Yes and Steely Dan (both at the Palace) were worth every penny and minute spent (pre Walter Becker's death...which I am guessing Donald Fagen is already undead, so he should be around awhile). Im pretty sure this is a swing and a miss but, as part of my music snob claim, I will get to say I saw him...even if he sucks.

There is a parking garage with 671 parking spaces directly across the street from the Palace. You enter it from 5th street. I have never seen it more than half full for a concert. Cost is between $6 and $8. Enjoy the show.

Fifth Street Garage
630 South 4th Avenue
671 covered spaces (directly across the street from theatre - 25 feet)

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong.......

But no.... Not going.

About a year ago, I went down the Brian Wilson rabbit hole for a few months. I'm good.

My thoughts are on these older performers is see them while you can.

You may never get another opportunity.

Of course Brian Wilson is an extremely talented song writer, with an extraordinary body of work.

As far as I know he sticks to keyboard now (earlier he played bass). He is not a great singer or performer. You mentioned McCartney and Elton John -- their performances are legendary.

He will have others sing lead on a lot of the songs. Obviously he will have multiple singers to handle his (often complex) harmonies.

I am glad that I saw many of these classic performers, though many of them are/were way past their prime.

I saw Frank Sinatra five times (twice in Cincinnati, once in Minneapolis, twice in Atlanta). The last time was on a steamy July evening outdoors. Frank wore a 3-piece tux. Of course, being full of vanity, he wouldn't remove his vest or jacket. After the opening song, he said it will be short concert tonight.

I saw Tony Bennett; he was in his 80's. Very entertaining -- a top professional. He's 92 now.

Saw McCartney three times. Super performer. Set list was 42 songs. He never took a break (though his band mates did). He sang lead and played an instrument on every song. He wore a long sleeve light blue t-shirt. He is a billionaire, but he was sweating like he was playing basketball.

Saw Frankie Valli three times. He's 84 now. Last time I saw him he sang along with a recording. He can't hit those high notes anymore.

We even saw the Monkees. Davy, Mickey, and Peter (not Nesmith). Glad we did. Five months later Davy was dead.

Saw the Stones twice, Eric Burdon (the Animals), Jack Bruce (lead singer for Cream), the Kinks, Paul Rodgers, Billy J Kramer, Mitch Ryder, Mark Lindsay twice, the Turtles twice, Peter Noone a few times, Gerry Marsden, Chad and Jeremy, Gary Puckett, Al Green, Diana Ross, Sly and the Family Stone. The James Gang (with Joe Walsh). Little Anthony and the Imperials. Hall & Oates. Seals & Crofts.

Some of these were on oldies tours (like "Happy Together" and "Hippie Fest").

Saw the Mamas and the Papas a few times. Cass was already dead. Spanky McFarland (no, not the child actor) of Spanky and Our Gang filled in for her. The only survivor now is Michelle Phillips.

In my early 20's we saw Ella Fitzgerald at the Beverly Hills Supper Club. Her preliminary act was the legendary Billy Eckstein. Saw Ruth Brown and Little Jimmy Scott.

Johnny Cash. June Carter. not together.

Tom Jones. The Beach Boys a few times; most recently on their 50th anniversary tour.

The Rascals. Front row for their Once Upon a Dream tour.

Many of these are no longer with us. See them while you still can.

You go see him because he is a musical genius and icon, he is not up to par but he is still breathing and his Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations and earlier work are part of a generation, that was how people from other countries and communists in the 60's thought of America. Same with Bob Dylan or anyone of that ilk. You go see knowing they can't sing and that Brian is pretty much completely burnt. Brian has earned respect and is a complete icon, he was that band and had all the arrangements. Most people all say Pet Sounds one of top 2-3 albums of all time and usually people go with Sounds because it influenced Sgt Peppers and Beatles were blown away. Came out probably less than a year.

Good Vibrations is considered a piece of work like a Bach or a Mozart would create in Rock terms, it is maybe the greatest rock song as far as arrangements and movements etc. Musicians are humbled and in awe of that.

Mike Love and the other guys are very lucky he was Brian's cousin, he would have been a used car salesman if not for Brian. Carl Wilson was a great voice and sang a lot of the big hits, God Only Knows.
Brother Dennis was not much of drummer but their harmonies as brothers were great.

Most of their albums were done by the historic Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles studio musicians. Many of the great albums like the Byrds first album other than Roger McGuinn playing on albums. Wrecking Crew may be on more music and big time albums and songs than any studio in world and that includes Motown, stax, Muscle Shoals, NY studios.
