I started using the exercise program Focus T25 last year to get in better shape and have lost over 40 lbs. Since then I have taken an interest in running 5K's and want to try to do a half marathon at some point. I know running can be hard on your body without the proper shoes and I really need some new running shoes but don't know what kind or style to buy. Have you ever been to John's Run/Walk Shop in Lexington to see what shoe type you need? I just didn't want to waste my time if it doesn't make a difference. Any help would be appreciated.

The very first marathon was ran without shoes when Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to let the Athenians know they had defeated the Persians in 490 BC.

Interesting footnote to that bit of information: Pheidippides keeled over dead just after his proclamation.

True. I can't even see out of my rear window because of them ... the two times a year that I do drive.

You should go for the barefoot style running shoes that are all the rage. Try high optic pink so everyone will notice you.

OP - yes, definitely go and get fitted for a pair. Make sure they watch you run on a treadmill in the store. Every time I have gone in for a fitting and bought their recommended shoes I have loved it. There are a lot of things that will start bothering you on a long run, but if you have the right pair of shoes, at least your feet wont be one of them.

Don't listen to that treadmill stuff. He's just messing with you. They do have a treadmill, but it's only for them to get chicks to run and watch them bounce. If they ask a dude to get on there, they're just screwing with you to try and get more money. It's like a car lot.

I'm running that route this November provided Greece is still a country then.

I think John's does make a difference. Found out two weird things about my feet when I went there to get fitted - I was ridiculously flat-footed and one foot is bigger than the other. If you plan on running seriously, I think spending money on some decent shoes is a good idea.

Also - congrats on the weight loss. If you like that program, P90X3 is a good one, as well.

I would seriously find the running thread.

If you're ever in Louisville - Swags. Best place to get fitted for shoes. Then buy online to save.

Halhigdon.com for training plans of any distance.

And - seriously - nipple lube. Bloody headlights suck.

I have done some P90X but the workouts are longer. I have thought about buying P90X3 since they are only 30 minutes. That tends to work into my schedule better. That was one of the things I like about T25. I also have Insanity Max30 and it was truly insane. :grimace:

It is definitely worth your time and the little extra you will spend on shoes to get the right shoe for you. Once you know what you need if you want to penny-pinch you can do so knowing what type shoe you need. Mind you, shoes change every year and what works for you today might not do so next season. I ran in Nike Pegasus' for many years but Nike started making that shoe "cheaper" as they brought out higher end shoes.
Also, if you run regularly...like daily it's a good idea to have at least 2 pairs that you can rotate and allow the shoe to recover as they get compressed as you run. It's also a good idea to keep track of the mileage on the shoe. Apps like MapMyRun and others have the ability to allow you to tell it what shoe you are wearing and it keeps the mileage. I set a limit of 400 miles with my running shoes.

Do go to a running specialty store to get the best info. They should put you on a treadmill and watch how your foot strikes to know if you pronate, supinate or are neutral. Your weight also will dictate how much cushioning you need. Other variables are the amount of drop in the shoe from heel to toe. Shoes that are too flat cause me Achilles problems...other runners swear by them.
At the very least you should take a pair of shoes you've run in with you for them to examine the wear.
For best results don't use your designated running shoes for everyday use. Wear them when you run and then change into another pair.

I'm not the biggest fan of running but was really good at it.

I ran a 15.23 5k and 4.28 mile my senior year.

I don't currently run and have no interest doing it again.

I am an avid runner. I run an average of 5 miles per day, or 5 days a week.

The T25 is a great workout. Keep doing it, and keep eating correctly. I can't stress enough how important what you're eating is.

The next thing I would say is ASICS ASICS ASICS ASICS ASICS. Disregard anything you hear about anything else. Real Runners mainly wear Asics, unless there is a specific reason why they don't. Find a man that runs 20+ miles per week and he will likely have a pair of Asics on. Order them online to fit your foot. Use their easy to use system to do it. It's a great process and ordering new shoes every3 months (half year or more for you probably) keeps you into running. The system they use is recommended by lots of informed runners.

Next, I will give you some advice people losing large amounts of weight need to focus on.

DO NOT JUST RUN. I will almost guarantee if you are losing 50-80 lbs or more, and you don't lift weights/muscle exercise, you will likely put it all back on, PLUS some. And if you do, you will replace the space muscle used to be with fat. I've seen this so many times with adults and students I work with. Lifting weights is extremely good for losing weight, as it burns calories in ways running won't. You will literally burn calories while you're sitting on the couch. Incorporating weight lifting into your routine will all but guarantee you WILL NOT put that weight back on. You will also feel a new meaning to "in shape" with the weights. The T25 is great, don't get me wrong. But eventually, work out your shape with free weight IF YOU CAN. That T-25 exercise will help tighten you lose skin as well, so do a little of everything if possible.

That's my advice, and some of this I do for a living.

Damn, you're fast. I run a 5.35 mile and 18 minute 5k. I wish I could get up there more but with my frame I'm not built for running that well. 5'11 218 lbs. I lift a lot so it's lots of weight to put on my knees. I also smoked for 10+ years and it's still effecting my breathing.
