Forget the expensive shoe advice. All you need are your basic canvas sneaks and proper motivation. You'll hit that target heart rate in a jiffy.

Damn, you're fast. I run a 5.35 mile and 18 minute 5k. I wish I could get up there more but with my frame I'm not built for running that well. 5'11 218 lbs. I lift a lot so it's lots of weight to put on my knees. I also smoked for 10+ years and it's still effecting my breathing.
I'm not nearly as capable as I was.

When I ran those times I was a 6' 1" 155 lb HS senior. Running came fairly easily. I went out for cross country my junior year because my girlfriend ran and broke 20 minutes my first meet.

The coaches explained to me that was good for a weeks worth of training, because so many people had beat me I didn't know, and each week that year I improved rapidly.

I did mile work outs as one of the weekly training excercises and I was always the best at that and the coach mentioned track. My senior year I did pretty well (top 5 in class) at state in both. Just wish it was in something that chicks thought was a little cooler...bragging about HS running achievements don't get much tail :)

Good shoes. Our coaches took us to running stores that matched our feet to a shoe. Asics and Saucony always fit me best.

The next thing I would say is ASICS ASICS ASICS ASICS ASICS. Disregard anything you hear about anything else. Real Runners mainly wear Asics, unless there is a specific reason why they don't. Find a man that runs 20+ miles per week and he will likely have a pair of Asics on. Order them online to fit your foot. Use their easy to use system to do it. It's a great process and ordering new shoes every3 months (half year or more for you probably) keeps you into running. The system they use is recommended by lots of informed runners.

completely false.

I ran a 4:19 mile and 9:19 2 mile in HS. I ran a year of college, too. 9:00 2 mile and 14:45 5k in college as a freshman. then I said eff this. I run to get back into shape here and there. more power to you if you want to put your body through a marathon. i'll stick to a couple miles at 8 minute mile pace.
