Im noting every name that quit on this team after 3 losses while racked with injuries. Ill be calling out all the hypocrites trying to hop back on board later this season
Go ahead. I hope we all have to eat crow, but nobody on this board has seen anything that leads us to believe we are a decent team. We have a PG who’s made of glass, selfish players, a NBA stud who hasn’t played in a year. Our best returning player is just now looking like his original self, we haven’t played much defense. We can’t shoot. We didn’t score for 12 minutes from the field. That is unbelievable.

What took his Arkansas team to the S16?
Definitely wasn't Aidoo and Johnell.
Cal would have brought in a few portal players had he stayed.
Knox and Richmond were definitely better as freshman than a lot of UK fans were expecting them to be.
Its a moot point but I think the roster Cal would have had at UK last year would have exceeded preseason expectations.
Piss on wanting Cal back. Can't believe the fans are saying this at any level.

It's not about wanting Cal back.
Its did we move on from Cal in the right direction?
So hypothetically if Pope was the best we could do maybe we should have stuck with Cal.
Even though it came crashing down in spectacular fashion, I still enjoyed the " Rob and Reed " show more than anything I've seen from this team.
This current UK is shaping up as one of the most bland vanilla group of players in recent memory.
No player is worth the price of a ticket to watch play.

I get the frustration but Cal lost to Oakland, Cal lost to St. Pete. In his last 4 years UK had not beat a ranked team by December 17 in the season. Right direction might be debatable but its hard to argue that we haven't seen some improvement overall.

Our frustration is that we've lost some big time made for TV matchups -Games that Cal would refuse to play if he wasn't even contractually required or pressured from the administration. I give Pope credit for wanting the smoke. He is just living with the results of not having a team prepared for it.

Right direction is also questionable in the sense that we were hoping for Hurley, who might have won but would have been caustic with the fanbase and Drew who was about as exciting as mudding drywall. Frankly in retrospect I'm glad we didn't get either of those guys, and both would have demanded a huge contract with a monster buyout - and remember, they both told us no.

So who was left after that? Beard?

I dunno, I get that Pope is struggling and the fanbase is frustrated but its too easy to say coach X would have us winning right now forgetting that we had two no's in the tank and were on our second tier choices.

There were plenty of coaches after Drew and Hurley. Problem is Mitch didn’t appear interested in trying to find one. He was too busy working on Drew and the women’s basketball coaching search. But did we bother asking Otzelberger from Iowa St? Lloyd from Arizona?

Like we went through this back in 2007 where fans coped about the BCG hire, claiming he was the only one wanting the job. There’s a reason Mitch wasn’t involved with the Calipari hire in 2009.

BCG was hired by Barnhart because it was a face saving move after Billy G left him at the alter.

Again, it easy to say Coach X would be winning now, but the assumption is that Coach X would win all 3 games (UL, Michigan St and UNC). Is Hubert Davis a great coach because he won against KY last night? is Kelsey?

I can't speak to Barnhart's mentality on his coaching order, but I think its important that he went after the coach everyone thought we should get with a monster offer and that coach said no. After that, there was no coach that was head and shoulders above everyone else. And given Barnhart dodged a huge bullet with Calipari on the buyout, I suspect he was gunshy about bringing in a second tier coach who would still demand job security.

Mitch had nothing to do with the Calipari hire. It was Mike Pratt with other former players and boosters that lead that search.

its going to be a long time before I ever say I wish we had Cal back

screw that guy and his fan contempt.
Exactly I'll never wish we had Cal back I'll go back and look at his last 5 years and NO THANK YOU. This Pope experiment is about over though loved the dude as a player but his resume just wasn't UK worthy as a coach. This isn't on him this is on the ******* that hired him I just hate Mitch Barnhart and I hope he retires soon because UK won't fire him!

Are we as fans absolutely sure that everyone told Mitch no? Or did he go straight from Drew to Pope because honestly that's what I get from it and that's a Mitch type move the dude doesn't like to do the work when it comes time to hire the right coach for the big time sports.... I mean the committee which Mitch is a member but not a voting member of found our football coach less than 24 hours after Stoops was fired.... They say he was talked to during the season though before we won those 2 games against Auburn and Florida. All I know is if Pope doesn't get this straightened out we need to move again on the basketball side of things. Mitch needs to be no where near another hire plain and simple....

Look, Pope is clearly failing and I have zero problem saying that, but this Cal revisionist history is non sense. That team Cal would have had at UK last year would have been a borderline tournament team at best. Knox and Richmond weren’t even close to Edwards last year.
That same Calipari team beat Pope in Rupp and went as far as UK did in the tournament!

With that said, I’d take a 3 yr. losing record before I would want to see Calipari coach another UK game!

Exactly, at least with Rob and Reed I felt like with any kind of defensive game we would win.

False. BCG was wanted by a booster. A friend told us he would be the next coach before I even knew who BCG was, and at least a week before Billy Donovan gave his press conference. Doesn't make the hire any better, but it was a money move because BCGs tab was picked up by that booster.

The problem is the team is banged up and has lost a couple of close games and got ran by a team that is just better than we are right now. As to the two close losses, Louisville and UNC both had a dude that was better than any healthy player we have, which is typically the difference in a close game. At 100% this team is top 12-15, not top 3, so missing a few kids is going to make them a undermanned squad against good teams. I thought the kids still played hard tonight and I am not bailing on them or the head coach 8 games in. Im ashamed that so many UK "fans" are so quick to bail on their team
Close? We lost to UL by 8 and only because they missed 7 straight FTs trying to salt it away at the end. And we lost with a huge home court advantage to UNC, who was also without one of their best players.

Agree on Cal. I have absolutely zero issues with moving on from Cal.

The reality of today is why would coaches making multi-million dollars at schools with lower expectations move to UK? Not many would. Look at big time football right now. The only guy doing that is Kiffin. Penn State, Florida etc. did not/will not get big names but got rising names. Barnhart ain’t hiring another Cal type that he cannot control.

Now did Barnhart get a rising name or did he take the easy way? I have my opinion and time will prove me right or wrong. I hope like hell I’m wrong. Barnhart hired BCG simply because he beat UL in the tourney. He wasn’t proven. Barnhart was forced to hire Cal. Now he has hired Pope. Pope had all the resources necessary yet puts Mark Fox on his staff?

Pope did a great job last year assembling a team. This year he looks like he went straight Billy Ball trying to shoestring together a team based on a spreadsheet and like he was struggling with resources EXCEPT he had the resources. He missed on every difference maker and has whiffed on all 2026 recruits to date. Why did he whiff on any and every “dude”? That is the biggest red flag. You have to have difference makers and he cannot get one. Like it or not those guys want to be NBA guys and Pope cannot convince them to come to UK except for one who is coming off major surgery and is looking like a reach.

Pope is a slave to his analytics especially regarding rotations and fatigue. He sold everyone on a modern offense yet assembled a team of guys who cannot shoot, cannot create and no viable backup PG. He wanted to shoot 30 threes a game yet assembled a team that cannot do that and have any chance for success. He looks like a guy floundering and cannot figure it out.

Anyone who wants Cal back is either delusional about Cal or trolling.

The issue is Barnhart has had 3 opportunities to hire a MBB coach and 1 was miserable (BCG), 1 he was forced to hire (Cal) and now Pope. Pope is looking like he assembled a team that doesn’t remotely fit his system as they cannot shoot and cannot create. Not the players fault. Pope has not closed the deal on any difference makers and the 26 cupboard is still empty. Did Barnhart simply settle instead of getting a coach who was better equipped to run a program of this magnitude?

There’s the name

“The Unacceptables”
I have settled on the unwatchable’s.

I have no desire to watch them against real competition because the outcome will most likely be a miserable loss.

And I have no desire to watch them against the cupcakes because those games are absolutely meaningless.

If you are referring to Oweh, the guy is still not a threat from outside. Unbelievable how guys can be playing this level of basketball and have the kinds of mechanics he does.

Pope making Oweh a priority is indicative of how out of touch he is with talent evaluation.

Oats made it clear he didn't want to be Kentucky, got a contract and pay increase as a result, Hurley publicly said no, Drew was offered and said no.....I mean after at the point (and I don't even put Drew in that category, he did win a NCCAT championship but it was during covid, is there any coach that is really that much better than the others ?

You may have your sources but I'm not buying what you're selling on this. Donovan was choice 1. Donovan told UK he was coming, then backed out and left Barnhart holding his you know what.

Brutal loss. They’re getting paid now, so booing is fair game.
I was at the gym. audible booing at the final horn. Not really a fan of that, especially this early in his tenure and one of our own, but people pay a lot of money to see a **** product so to each his own.

This x 1000! This job has like a 10 year shelf life. It ages you as bad as the presidency. Cal was well beyond that and all parties needed a change. He honestly looks healthier and happier again. Kudos to him!

However, Mitchell absolutely shat the bed with this hire. No one was happy about it when news broke. And people only got on board after Pitino snd the 96 team told them to. Literally no one was trying to hire Pope and BYU made larger investments right after he left and are now far better.

Honestly, we kind of need this season to go as bad as possible to move this process along as fast as possible.
