Anyone else worried about Hagans as our WR coach?

When I see someone PSU is going after possibly land at UGA, that doesn’t bother me. When I see someone PSU is going after land at Virginia, that does bother me.
So e-mail Happy Valley United… they are the ones in charge of the money, which is what it is all about anymore.,,

You mean a kid that grew up in Virginia who rooted for Virginia?
Yup. Same one that was offered a scholarship by that Virginia team he rooted for out of high school and chose to go to UNC. I know there are plenty of other factors that go into someone picking a place to go to school. That doesn’t mean it still can’t be frustrating to see that player of need go somewhere else.

I'll admit, I want instant gratification. I've thought it too. After a deep breath I set my superstitious mind aside and realize that we don't have the data points. We are in the fog of data outliers. JGF has been pro-active with this.

Hell, they have about 12 to get rid of, just to get down to the 85.
Probably will be a couple more who haven't yet made the move, who will try their luck in the NFL draft. But that still leaves a small bus full of guys that need to be processed out - before any more can come in.
Hence a reason for not diving into the portal.

Not true. In fact, it is an old and tired excuse used for decades by Penn State recruiting opponents. Penn State Football has recruited and signed tons of high profile HS players for many decades spanning the Paterno era.

Other ”middle of nowhere” places have prominent college athletic programs. Examples: Norman Oklahoma, Eugene Oregon, College Station Texas, Athens Georgia, Clemson South Carolina, South Bend Indiana, Tuscaloosa Alabama, and Lawrence Kansas. None of these locations would be confused with LA or New York City. Yet, they continue to have thriving athletic programs.

Tradition, historical success, university reputation, and coaches attract players regardless of location.
Not to be picky but take Athens GA off the list. I was in Athens for a game this fall and it was a bit over an hour from our Hotel in Atlanta. State College is much further away from a big population center.

lol. Continue to believe that. Things have and are sadly changing with greater speed. It is going to get tougher and tougher. And we will not be able to keep up with NIL (with anyone as HC).

Would gladly be wrong, but don’t think I am.
Be Glad 🙂…… You Are…..Wrong!

I don’t think 💭 I’m wrong 😑

I've a lot of comments on Green that have been. Why on earth do we want the kid that can't even get reps at UNC? Now he lands at UVa and its like. Why can't we get this kid?

I guess we stink either way.
Funny no one is talking about play selection, or QB that never learned how to go thru progression, or how many of the current WRs rarely see the field but NEVER receive a target....do we currently have any WRs with talent? I feel we do...but without game experience difficult to judge. Yes i know.....you get PT thru practice...well i'll tell you from experience you cannot simulate game conditions in practice, only in a game. We had plenty of games with outcomes predetermined....get those guys in the game and if they bomb (ie: poor route running, poor blocking, poor atitude and spirit) then okay...process them. Do we really want to process Saunders, Clifford, Evans, etc without actually seeing them in more games?

I think I am in the camp with you and some others here who are not totally sure this WR room lacks talent. The bomb to Omari Evans in MSU game was a shocker. This guy was invisible most of the season - had a TD catch in mop up early from Beau. it was clear he is electric and he must not have been on the list for the previous OC. Wallace looked big time v WVU in the opener, then gets injured and returns, but somehow is not the same, then gets hurt but not out for the year - but we never saw him again. many of the other guys have shown ability at times but not consistent.

new OC talks about how scheme can provide openings for both run and pass game - helping guys get open.

do we lack athletic ability in the WR room? are they slow? I am not sure, and do we even know. I recall that Sanders was supposed to be the next Hamler in terms of speed. how much is talent vs scheme still seems up in the air. the WR coach of course has to coach them to perform inside the scheme.

A guy like this is a must get. And it appears we’re not getting Colbie from The U, who’s from Scranton btw. So many other big time WR’s from the portal are gone. Can’t even lock up Fleming yet, and he’s probably gunna flake on us again. No one real special signed as a WR yesterday. Honestly, I don’t think Marques Hagans is right for the big time job here. I’m sure Franklin can’t be happy with his results so far on the field and off. WR play was awful this year. With even a decent group, not a great group, we could’ve been in the playoffs. I know those were not his recruits, but he hasn’t shown he can recruit here or even develop. WR’s are the biggest weakness (quite possibly maybe the only weakness) on the team and nothing has been done to improve that for the ‘24 season.

Say what you will about Stubblefield. Maybe not a great recruiter but a pretty darn good developer of talent. From day 1 he came and fixed our on field WR issues that were glaring since Josh Gattis left. This was why EVERYONE was shocked when he was let go after the Rose Bowl win.

I don’t know. Marques seems like a great guy but this is big business. WE CAN’T GO INTO NEXT SEASON WITH THIS SAME GROUP (even more so if KLS leaves) and expect to out score the top teams in the new B1G. It will be a big disappointment if he doesn’t bring in a couple big time players. Get er done Marques but I’m not holding my breath.

Thought's?

Here is my thought - Give the guy more than an hour and half as coach. As for portal players. None of them are that amazing. It will all be OK.

Penn State is the center of the college football universe. All other teams exist only to provide our beloved Lions with competition on Saturdays.
This is exactly the best point to jump in this great thread. Thanks for expressing my thoughts exactly. We have two nationally recruited QB studs, rebuilt O-Line infrastructure, the richest per capita alumni base and 107K nut jobs screaming for them every week. Other than Bama, they can't go anywhere else where it has been done better longer than us.

But It is time for Marcus to shine, The blue bloods know you build the foundation of your team with recruiting, and we have two studs at WR in Denmark and Gonzales and the next great TE in the incoming class. Denmark should be licking his chops to get to campus. The kid gets 12 USA-Soviet Union Lake Placid opportunites each week as a Lion. Butler is right, he can and the freshman TE can become legends. Does James have the same courage to play these kids the way Joe did when the Williams, Butler and what his face were freshman catching passes from Robinson in 2008?

The portal season is turning out to be all about the bag without the rookie contract of three years. I am sorry fellas and RIP Joe but pay them and if they don't produce to the expectation, process them. No more participation trophies to portal phenoms.

What experience tells you game conditions cannot be simulated in practice? If so, every coach who has ever lived doesn't have your insight.

As for insight....maybe that is why so many get fired? With you vast knowledge i am wondering why you chose to criticize me personally and not explain why my statement was faulty? Stop attacking posters and add relevant information.
