It is at Loyola Academy. Hoerster Field is the playing field within it.

When did LA move from Chicago's north side to Wilmette?

During my four years at MC, we never played you in football. Amazing. I don't believe we played DePaul Academy or Holy Trinity, either.

We did play Weber a few times -- I recall that their cheerleaders were gorgeous!

LA moved to Wilmette to start the 1957-58 academic year.

In the late 50s/early 60s, there were plenty of Catholic high schools for Loyola to play without having to go too far south: St. Pat's, Weber, DePaul Academy, Holy Trinity, St. George, Gordon, Fenwick, St. Mel, St. Ignatius, St. Pat's etc. Around that time, there were lots of changes with schools dropping football and joining the new Suburban Catholic Conference.

Ramblin, minor correction, some Catholic High Schools left the Catholic League to join the Chicagoland Prep League in the late 50's early 60's. St. George, St. Pats, DeLaSalle, etc. I believe the impetus was, believe it or not, to be able to join the IHSA.

What other locations was LA looking at? Was it always Wilmette?

MC,

The original Loyola school building still stands at Loyola Univrsity. It's Dumbach Hall. I had a ton of classes there.

From the Illinois High School Glory Days website:

"Chicagoland Prep
Formed in 1961 when De La Salle, St. George, St. Mel, and St. Patrick broke off from the Chicago Catholic league. The original 4 were joined by Holy Cross and St Viator in 1963. In 1966 Holy Cross left and Marian Catholic joined. St. Mel dropped football in 1967 and in 1968 Marist and St Joseph joined. St. George dropped football in 1969 and St Francis De Sales joined that same year, which also was the last for the league."

"Suburban Catholic (1960-1973)
Formed in 1960 its charter members were Immaculate Conception, Joliet Catholic, Marmion, Notre Dame, St. Edward and St Procopius. Woodstock Marian and Wheaton St. Francis joined in 1964. Carmel and Holy Cross joined in 1966."

As far as I know, it was always Wilmette. I've been told there was definitely some shenanigans that took place to acquire the land relative to proxy buyers and obscuring Loyola's identity as the real behind the scenes player that was putting together a number of separate parcels/lots into a campus footprint large enough to accommodate the facilities that were planned. This was done to hold down land acquisition costs.

Back when New Trier West closed in the 80s, there was talk within the LA community about Loyola acquiring that larger/newer campus and moving up the road, but it never amounted to more than talk. I think the price tag was deemed too high at the time.

When LA was at Loyola U's campus where did the Ramblers play - Loyola Park (about 7000 N on Sheridan) looks like it was a former stadium, or at the smaller track oval just north of Dumbach Hall?

Weber probably had some Pitt Panther demographics going on. One of my favorite "Sportswriters on TV" episodes was when Bill Gleason said the best looking college cheerleaders were not in the SEC or at UCLA or USC but the University of Pittsburgh.

Something tells me the campus field, but I'm not 100% sure.

LA played most home games on campus while in Rogers Park.

I wish they would put Loyola Park's stadium back to use - beautiful field, right on the water.
