Are our standards too high, given we live in the SEC?

I mean, I’m done with Beaner, but look at the constant coaching turnover in the SEC. Only a few schools are getting the Sabans and the Smarts. The rest are hiring really really good talented coaches, but they last only 4-5 years. The modern SEC is the most competitive conference that has ever existed in the history of college athletics, and thus the schedules are the most brutal in history…are we being a tad too expecting? What should our expectations be? Spurrier is a bonafide legend and a consummate winner, and he only got us to one SEC championship (but possibly 3 playoffs by those 11-1 seasons), so it’s not like it’s easy. I ask again…what the eff should we realistically expect? Here’s what I think, minimum…

1. hire competent, proven coaches from top to bottom. Some years you’ll have to dig, but be competitive in the hiring process. Don’t **** ing settle.
2. Have a competitive football program, where a 9-win season is the norm. Playoffs in a 12 team format are entirely doable. We should never be a doormat.
3. SC is a major university, with SEC money. Have the AD and BOT generate a competitive business model in today’s NIL environment to be able to pay for talent.
4. Stop signing stupid long term coaching extensions until the ^^^ terms above are norm
5. Portal poaching is fine for skill players, but also have a plan for recruiting areas of longterm need like OL and DL, and don’t relent! OL should be an area of laser focus EVERY YEAR.

If you aren’t hiring big time then you don’t pay big time. We hire people trying to prove themselves but pay them like they are top 20 college coaches.

They fail to live up to the salary and we are screwed.

We are stupid for giving out these contracts.

Beamer was never qualified for this position. He is a nepo baby. I think a Spurrier showed we could compete, even though we never got over the hump, but he was the only coach we've hired in 30 years. SC always hired from former coordinators or coordinators who failed as head coaches. What we don't know and may never know is which real coaches we reached out to or made an offer to who looked and this dumpster fire and said no, I'm good. People say UGA fired Richt to hire Smart so we didn't get there first. My guess is Smart leveraged our offer and never would have come here. This place is a disgrace and always will be. We always have hope, against all evidence. My guess is next year is going to be a bloodbath. Our schedule is slightly easier than a pro schedule. I could legit see a 3-9 or 2-10 finish. At best we sneak into a bowl with 6 wins, but that would be a miracle.

Spurrier was the equivalent of getting a Saban now, and it took a good many years and a sprouting of blue chip local jimmys and joes to get relevant. They didn’t false start, miss blocks, drop passes, miss tackles, etc. Once they left, so did spurrier and that relevance. Last year Beamer had jimmys and joes; they left, and here we are. We are really just a southern West Virginia; the football gods have thus decreed. We’re not going to be able to buy a sustainable successful program. The hamster wheel is perpetual.

I heard we were at his house and he was about to sign the contract when the phone call came.
I've heard that story but I have to wonder how true it is. It sounds like a made for tv drama scene. The alumnus and former player of good ole State U sitting at the table with the contract making him head coach of a rival team sitting in front of him, pen in hand, about to sign and the phone rings. The coach's wife picks up the phone in the other room and walks into the room where the coach is sitting at the table with the representatives of the rival school. She quietly tells the coach "you probably want to take this call". There is silence at the table where the rival school's representatives are sitting and waiting, looking at each other wondering who could be on the phone.

It is the AD at good old State U calling to offer him the job. Coach walks back into the room and announces "State U has offered me the head coaching job". Coach's wife screams, the kids run into the room for a group hug and the rival representatives silently gather the contract papers and walk out of the house.

A true Hallmark moment.

You wrote a pretty good script there.

They were at his house when news of Mark Richt being fired came out. Which halted the discussions with us per Mrs. Smart.

He obviously would of dumped us later whenever the UGA job came open,

Kirby Smart Was 'Really Close' to Taking South Carolina Job in 2015, Wife Says /

Due to his success as a defensive coordinator for Alabama, Kirby Smart was one of the most popular names on the coaching market in 2015. Before he eventually signed a contract with Georgia, he had discussions with another SEC program.
According to Smart's wife, Mary Beth Smart, he was really close to taking the South Carolina job. Of course, that was before Georgia came in with an offer he couldn't refuse.

"We were really close to taking [the] South Carolina [offer] at the time,” Mary Beth Smart said during an appearance on 960 The Ref. “The AD [Ray Tanner] and one of the athletic administration guys were in the kitchen meeting with us that morning Coach [Mark] Richt was fired. It was leading down that road. The way the timing fell for him was really special."

Hell no. Gamecock fans have NEVER demanded better. Show up and spend $ no matter if the product is worth a damn or not. As long as $ is made then the bot and athletic department will do the bare minimum. It’s like any business in that respect. If the food sucks but you continue to show up and pay for it then there is zero motivation to change.

We paid a coach $8 million to win 4 games in year 5 and half the fans are still defending him. Our standards aren't nearly high enough.
