Here's an example of even players themselves not being happy with the way things are currently being run in college football. I think a lot of people find this problematic, both inside the sport and those looking on from the outside. Something will need to change since the incentive structures related to money tend to give preference toward players you don't have yet versus the players you do have. Retention can obviously also cost a lot (see Donte Moore), but beating out other schools for new guys will cost even more in a number of situations. I don't blame players for being upset in these situations, and I can't imagine Ole Miss' locker room being the only one with tension in it over NIL compensation matters. This is one of the reasons I favor collective bargaining, professional-style contracts, etc. for solving a lot of issues that are part of the system right now.

It’s just like almost any company in the real world. Do you want to stay loyal and probably make less or do you want to jump around and get a nice pay increase each time. It can be messy sometimes but people/players will make their own choices.

This is true, because you usually have to pay more for what you don't have. But if I can use the NFL as a parallel example, even if teams have to spend a little more to beat out the competition for a FA, at least that FA typically signs a multi-year contract. The NFL does not have to negotiate their entire roster after each season—at least there is some form of stability there. College football is far more unstable in that regard, and inflation may become a problem even more quickly due to the annual cycle built into the system at the moment.

Having a CBA-type structure is a good start, but it won't eliminate comp issues as long as NIL, provided by third-parties and off the books of the schools as it should be, remains. What Hath the NCAA Wrought?
That’s why if there will be meaningful change, then eventually the NCAA will have to be discarded by the big conferences who will do what they want. The NCAA is handcuffed by the threat of litigation.

Whether it's the NCAA or a successor organization, and even with a CBA in place, what prevents individuals with bags of cash, with or without the connivance of coaches and players' agents, from blowing up the whole thing

Semi-serious response:

What prevents some "booster" of the Philadelphia Eagles from going to Patrick Mahomes (or whomever) and saying "I'll give you $100 million - if you go sign a FA contract with the Eagles for $1 Million per year"?
(So the Eagles could spend "their " money on other players)

Semi-serious, of course - but the principals involved would be similar. The NFL has adults in the room, and no one would likely even think to do that, and most certainly if they did the league would behave in such a way as to prevent it. I would think.

Endorsement contracts are reviewed by the NFL, the NFLPA, and the teams themselves.

Pretty hard to hide $100 million under the table. Once it was discovered, and it would happen faster than you think, the player's career is over, his agent is decertified, and various participants in the scheme would be subject to prosecution under Federal and state money laundering and wire fraud statutes.

PSA had a good year in 05 and then a mediocre year in year 06. Kind of like PSU had a good year last year.

Do you still want Poz or should we have cleaned house after 04?

Did you book your championship tickets or are you lowering your expectations for a rebuild?

Yep. Obviously.

So why no such controls in "college" sports? (asking that rhetorically)
