Attending upcoming major indoor sporting events

I’m having a sense of deja vu all over again.

At the start of the pandemic a buddy and I had tickets to attend San Diego State mens basketball in the first round of the NCAA tourney in Sacramento when Covid pulled the rug out with all tourney games cancelled. We are supposed to attend the SDSU-UCSD mens basketball game next week but I have the feeling that game may be cancelled. UCSD has been doing research monitoring waste water at different locations on and off campus and results from a recent round of testing at a large waste treatment plant shows the potential for a large Covid surge over the next few weeks from both Delta and Omicron infections.

Vaccinations and maskings may allow fans to continue to attend games. But many players and staff have been testing positive lately on both pro and college teams causing cancellations. These new tests in San Diego may portend a major surge here that could cause cancellation of local sporting and entertainment events, esp those indoors with large audiences. Many European governments have recently imposed new stringent measures limiting activities and public events. Another factor is holiday travel including those attending bowl games and other holiday sporting events. I’ve been attending more indoor events recently where proof of vaccinations and masks have been required but will these restrictions be enough to dampen the projected surge ahead? The next few weeks will be a challenge for college and pro sports programs esp the hosting of indoor sporting events. I don’t see authorities cancelling outdoor events like Bowl games but more indoor events I think will be at risk of cancellation over the weeks to come as we encounter yet another wave of Covid.

The NHL just announced a de facto border closure, which means NHL teams can’t travel for international (US vs Canadian teams) until after the scheduled holiday break ends after Christmas.

And the NFL has limited testing to those who are showing symptoms… can’t have this pesky virus cancel any games this year.

Not exactly. The players and the owners negotiated the new changes. Big difference.

Not exactly. Only the completely vaccinated will not be tested. Which makes sense. Completely vaccinated 20 and 30-year olds have little to no risk of serious illness due to Covid-19. Vaccinated folks will need to learn to live with the virus, because it ain't going away.

Get your jabs.

We are vaxed/boosted and 8YO has her shots. We STILL feel uncomfortable at indoor events here in unvaxed/unmasked Idaho (lowest vax rate in country), but, as you say, we are learning to live with it. Idaho is more about the outdoors, anyway.

I wouldn't have any hesitation about going to a Cats BBall game, particularly as their is a lot of unintentional distancing (low attendance)
