Some quick take-aways from this interview if you do not choose to listen to the entire 21+ minutes:
  • not much detail about the modifications IDPH offering to the IHSA Phase 2 proposal except regarding widespread use of face coverings for those not actually actively competing
  • although technically "on the table," likelihood low of athletic season flip-flopping due to the magnitude of the undertaking at this late date
  • IHSA sports deemed "high risk" (like FB, by NFHS definition) may not be contested during 2020-21 school year, but those in the medium or low-risk could still be offered
  • if the FB season starts late, the regular season will be cut back with an attempt to conduct a post-season
  • admittedly, what happens in the professional/collegiate sports reopening realm will either provide a goose to HS sports or dampen the prospects.

I wonder if flipping the football season to the spring would result in football remaining in the spring for years to come?

For next year purposes, how would a spring football season look like and when would it end? June? July? With that said, do we expect kids to play that fall? We would be looking at only a one or two month recovery period.

Somebody had to say it.

I said it on another thread, you cant play a football season in the Spring then double back to and play again 2 or 3 months later. They need a rest and recovery period

If plan is approved with minor adjustments related to mask usage by those not participating then WHY would “high risk” sports be in doubt for the fall? The plan as drafted includes playing games. It has no mention of exclusion of sports like football. So if that is a modification to the proposal I’d call that a pretty damn major modification, not minor!

Is a spring season and then turnaround and play 3 mo later in the fall that big a deal?

-Several other states have padded spring ball and then play in the fall.
- Once you leave HS, you will have a spring practice season if you play in college.
-IHSA kids have a padded summer and hit during these months.
-Always hated going straight into hoops after football season cause my body wasn’t ready for all that cardio and needed rest. You’re a kid - you just do it cause you love it.
- They can always limit the number of contact the kids get.

Not ideal, but trying to find solutions. Don’t think it’s a bad idea.

would much rather still play in the fall.

The IDPH modifications are purely for the implementation of Stage 2 of IHSA proposal for advancing summer programs - nothing beyond that narrow application.

So you would be playing you season after national signing day. Bad for those prospect hoping to move up with a good senior season. And then there are the highly recruited studs that have already committed. Some of those are already on campus for the spring semester. Others may just not play to avoid injury. Maybe do track instead

It’s not ideal for recruiting, signing dates, or anything really. But in all honesty....at this point who cares about recruiting? So less than 1% of kids who are going to D1 it doesn’t work out too well for them.

If they can find a way for kids to be able to play during a worldwide pandemic - then do it.

If it’s me, and I’m a 5 star senior, I’m playing my senior year no matter what. But the world is different from when I played - what do I know.

Many people care about recruiting, as far as I can tell, those are the people fighting the hardest for everybody else.

Obviously recruiting is important but don’t it matters here. Do whatever needs to be done to have a safe season for the kids.

If you start the season the first week in March, if you make it to State it would end the first week of June, so it's possible to get a month off then begin workouts again in July for an end of August kickoff....but the real roadblock would be the pre-season practices....it's Chicago...Jan and Feb temps mixed with unpredictable snow falls may make outdoor practices impossible with the resources these schools have. If there is Basketball and Wrestling they will have the gyms after school....I guess you can come in before school but it just seems like it would be a real pain in the a**. I know this year you have to take what you can get I just think the logistics will really get in the way in these cold weather states.

so you would be pushing it out about eight months from now. Why will that make it any safer? What’s going to change? Unless there is some miracle cure or the virus somehow dies off, the situation is the same

Agreed, it’s a stall tactic by MI Governor.

you said it best - take what you can get. Nothing is ideal here but something is better than nothing.

wonder where we will be at when we look back 12mo from now

Don't think so. Even the today-renamed IHSA Phase 4 plan only relates to summer contact contests like 7-on-7s. In-season games will be a whole 'nuther thing.

We need to get someone to get an official statement from the IHSA about this argument we are having about what competition they are talking about. They just say competition, they talk about officials, they talk about fan capacity, and they even address concession stands. No where do they explicitly say this does not apply to regular season play. I’m not saying you’re wrong or others who assume this only applies to summer but I also don’t see where it makes it clear it is ONLY about summer. What summer “competition” has concession stands open? Since they are explicitly addressed in the document as okay to be open.
