Okay I’m going to take a break at halftime, but I have to honestly say the first half defense was far worse than I remembered it being during the live watch (and that’s saying something). Things really improved when Pope decided to start switching the screens rather than icing them. Waited way too late to make that adjustment…we might have given up 60-65 first half points if we didn’t switch ball screen coverage when we did. Gee whiz

I want to shout DOH!!! on so many of these.

But I guess the silver lining in so many idiot mistakes is it doesn't take Yaxel Lendeborg or AJ Dyb🎅 to correct them. It just takes regular guys "getting" it.

And part of that may be playing in a frothing sold out Yum! Center thier third real game as a team. That can make you un-get a fair amount of the stuff you have already started to get——just don't really have it down perfect. Throw a monster like Mikkel Brown into that mix and imperfect means burned.

I agree, man. People saying it had anything to do with “missing” on this or that player are dead wrong imo. This was a schematic and tactical gameplan issue. I didn’t see many situations where I felt that we weren’t capable of defending the play because we dont have Lamar Wilkerson or Caleb Wilson lol. Pope is going to have to be more flexible on defense, because whatever identity he thinks we have isn’t going to work, or at least it didn’t in the first half. Btw even JQ isn’t going to fix the issues on ball screen coverage that we had early in that game. Pope has been saying that we have struggled in ball screen coverage in practice and it shows. The good news is time can fix most of it, if the guys are willing to commit to communicating better, sprinting hard to prevent transition buckets, knowing your assignment, etc. I didn’t see anything unfixable on the tape so far, which should be good news for any Kentucky fan who believes we can be a title team. Now the bad news is we weren’t bad defensively—- we were atrocious by and large.

Second half defensive possessions
1 - Chandler and Mo attempt trapping McKneeley (that or miscommunication of assignment). This causes rotation to result in Mo having to guard Conwell and Chandler having to guard Hadley who gets a post up on the right block. Mo helps in to far and can’t get out to contest a splash three for Conwell (19:34).

2 - 2-5 ball screen switch between Garrison and Chandler eventually results in Chandler being posted up by Hadley after a couple of reversals. Oweh provides help and traps Hadley. Aberdeen doesn’t rotate over to corner shooter, which is McKneeley. Easy three (18:50).

3 - McNeeley attempts to drive at Chandler. Big mistake as Chandler cuts him off and he’s going nowhere. McKneeley fires a pass back toward the left corner and Oweh is there to intercept it. Outstanding defensive possession. (18:24).

4 - 1-5 ball screen. Aberdeen fights over, Garrison hard hedge and doesn’t return to Fru. Confusion about switching/assignment results in the 5 getting an easy layup (18:09).

5 - Bad shot by Aberdeen trying to draw a foul leads to transition opportunity. Multiple players jogging back instead of sprinting. Conwell gets a good look at a deep three but finds iron, contested late by OO (17:37).

6 - Garrison defends a post hook by Fru and gets called for foul. Really good footwork by BG. Good vertical contest, probably a pretty awful foul call imho. Should have been a block but Fru gets free throws (17:10).

7 - Mo caught ball watching a 1-5 screen that he wasn’t involved in. Far too large gap, over help. Pass straight to Hadley for an easy three with a way late contest (16:39).

8 - Brown attempts straight line drive against Oweh. Oweh gets beat on blow by but stays engaged. Brown runs into help and misses a wild layup that was contested by Oweh and Moreno (16:22).

9 - Wooley tries to force layup in transition off missed Kentucky shot, but Lowe keeps body parallel and blocks the shot and attempts to throw the ball off Wooley. Out of bounds, UL retains possession (16:02).

Conwell immediately blows by Jelavic on the perimeter but Moreno’s help contest results in a missed layup (15:51).

10 - Oweh can’t get through pin down so 5-2 DHO results in Conwell open three point look. Oweh works his tail off to contest and does which results in a missed shot (15:38).
However, Oweh’s momentum carried him out of the play and that ball happened to bounce right back in Conwell’s vicinity for offensive rebound. 5-3 DHO, where Jasper goes under and Wooley gets open three point look. Jasper late contest is unsuccessful (15:23).

11 - Moreno playing big gap versus Khalifa in DHO. Khalifa takes open three but misses (14:34). Ball bounces back to Khalifa’s area — Moreno’s gap was still so wide that he wasn’t there for the long rebound. UL retains possession. Four Wildcats inside the three point arc, simple pass back to Brown for wide open deep three, he misses (14:29).

I really wish we could defend the screen like Houston does. I love the trap up top over the screen, usually forces a bad pass and always stops guard penetration. The pass to the roller is also hard to make. We have to use our defense to our advantage and get out in transition.
Louisville basically did that against us too. Aggressively double the ball handler on the screen. Lowe made a couple nice passes out of it for easy baskets but mostly it took us out of the flow of the possession, and then we’d get sped up with a shortened shot clock, leading to some of our turnovers.

Post the guard. That’s one way to counter switching on screens. The Scheyer/Duke philosophy: relentlessly hunt mismatches and win one-on-one.

Garrison in three games 64 minutes played at 6'10" and good athleticism .... has blocked ONE shot.

Moreno in three games 55 minutes played at 7'0" ..... has blocked ONE shot.

When healthy Jayden Quaintance needs to play 25 to 30 minutes a game.
Can't wait to see Quaintance play for us. Moreno has been much better than expected this early in the season, and is really good in the pick and roll, but we need JQ's rim protection "bad"

13 - Dioubate gets caught on a pin down. Lowe is playing drop coverage and perhaps doesnt know Mo got stuck. McNeeley curls off the screen and Mo is late to contest a left wing three, while Lowe still has two feet near the free throw line, defending no one and helping on no one. Either this is some F-level ball watching and confusion or defensive strategy so complex I’m incapable of understanding the point here. Easy splash three for McKneeley, poor Mo (13:46).

15 - Conwell forces a low block fade versus Moreno, who is matched up due to secondary break after bad shot attempt by Aberdeen. Moreno gets called for debatable foul call on a pretty good contest (12:42).

Edit: Rewatched this play and I think it’s a phantom foul call. Vertical contest, didn’t body him either. Bad call.

16 - Live ball turnover leaves Rodgers an easy layup, which he misses(12:41). Oweh but on the pump fake trying to contest it but it’s understandable given the situation on the play. Note that Rodgers clearly pushed off, which is what resulted in the live ball turnover—bad time to swallow the whistle.

Out of bounds. After Kelsey challenge, ball returned to Louisville, who retains the possession.

Wow. Brown tries to iso Garrison and can’t shake him, as BG gives gap and uses length to contest a mid range shot which misses. Fouls call awarded to put Brown at the free throw line. Don’t agree with the foul call. Garrison gave landing space and likely got whistled because of the post-shot lower arm receiving contact. Dumb call (12:24).

17 - Wooley ends up with an open corner three after a couple of deflections, great job poking in there by Lowe. Team defense began reacting to the potential loose ball which is what led to Wooley being open. He missed the three (11:38).

18 - Lowe doesn’t rotate over on a ball reversal. Two feet in the paint…yikes! Wooley with a wide open three from the right wing and he misses it (11:10). Garrison comes down with a hell of a rebound in a crowd to close the possession as well.

20 - Chandler and Garrison assignment confusion results in Chandler staying on block guarding Fru with Garrison also being in the area. Both players attempt to rotate to the corner late to contest a three by #9 but he missed the shot. Seems to me that either someone didn’t call out the switch/rotation or someone didn’t hear the call out. Regardless, assignment confusion has been a theme all night specifically for DHO, help, or screen action that involves the combination of Chandler/ Garrison. Unfortunately, the missed shot (9:34) is an easy offensive rebound for Fru, since both Chandler and Garrison were out of position thanks to the desperate rotation. Ball ends up getting reversed to Wooley who was unable to make the left elbow three over Williams, who contested beautifully (9:28). Garrison was late to put a body on Fru, who grabs another offensive rebound to continue the possession. Louisville attempts a 1/5 PnR but Fru enjoyed setting the screen a little too much on Aberdeen. Offensive foul, turnover. (9:22).

21 - Wildcats put on a little pressure with a trap. Louisville has no trouble with it and the result is a mismatched defensively when trying to get back into traditional man to man. Chandler tries to trap McNeeley along with Garrison, who doesn’t return back to Fru, who receives a pocket pass for a spin dunk around Chandler. (8:42).
