If you've ever been to the Louvre, the size of it is mind-boggling. The main palace (not counting the modern addition) is 2.6 million square feet. Bigger than Versailles, bigger than Esterhazy Palace. The only museum in the world that's bigger is the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The Louvre is like 10 Wal-Marts broken up into long corridors.

So it's not surprising that there aren't enough cameras or sensors. Security for a building like that would be crazy expensive. On the other hand, the Louvre costs 22 Euro and takes in 9 million visitors, so that's roughly $200m just in admission revenue. I'm sure the French will secure it now that the vulnerability has been exposed.

Perhaps they should hire Walmart as security consultants.

True. I was just surprised when they said there were 5 security guards/ employees in the actual room of the jewels and the adjoining rooms and never intervened in that time frame. I wouldn’t expect others from across the building to get there as the thieves were gone in 7-10 min.

Inside job by the French secret service (DGSE) as a distraction to the smoldering domestic issues and parliamentary shift show.

A brazen daylight robbery......
There is no more East Wing. It’s gone.😢
I understand the US secret service said it was an inside job.

The East Wing was built by Teddy Roosevelt in 1902 and expanded by FDR in 1942 to accommodate wartime staff. It was an historic building.

The Louvre just had to shut down one of their galleries and office space due to structural damage.

Just put the Mona Lisa in its own small museum. Florence does that with Michaelangelo’s David.

Haven't had the pleasure of going to the Louvre, but some say that a small one won't cut it. Perhaps they should make the Mona Lisa bigger? :ROFLMAO:

This made me check: The Louvre is the world’s largest art museum.

When I visited Paris the Louvre was closed because of the Assumption, a Catholic Holy Day . I saw the Hermitage and thought that appeared bigger . It is smaller , 2nd largest, but has the most paintings at over 3 million pieces .

Wall Street Journal had an interesting article last Friday on museum robberies in France.

Astoundingly, there have been nine (9) significant museum robberies in France so far in 2025. Does 9 make a pattern?
