Awful play calling.

Was wondering how long it would take you to start bitching (which everyone knows is all you're capable of doing) ....hence, how long it would take for me to weld you permanently to my Ignore list.

Cool...he's right though. Our offense came out balanced and got a td.... ....then suddenly we are all about passing. Sure, some great big plays...but clearly not balanced and I think it cost us one or two more TD's.

i know, Hard to be happy at 37-0.

You're the person who can't believe the play calling after a loss.....yet think it's great when we win.

It's ok to evaluate without consideration of the score. Despite what you might have read recently on the forums....we're not playing Alabama tonight.

Selling out to stop the run...throw over top....skylar missed a couple in 1st half or we would have had 30. Second half much more balanced because of Ga Southern coverage.LGM[WVU]

What Bubba said. GS had only two db's playing off the line several times. When you've four fast guys on the perimeter in that situation you chuck the ball down the field and let the receivers run under it.

I seem to remember it working a few times last night.

Clearly needed a more balanced attack in first half. Needed more rushes once we were across mid field. GS consistently lined up with 6 in the box on 1st and 2nd down. Sometimes you take what the defense gives you.

I'm guessing that Holgorsen could tell that his defense was going to keep GA Southern in check and took the opportunity to work on the part of the offense that needs work, which is the passing game. We will obviously get more balanced when necessary. My concern is that Howard is still over throwing his receivers on the underneath routes. I am wondering if it has something to do with his height and inability to see his receivers. I'm not really sure, just a thought. The defense looks like they are as good as advertised.

passing on every down.
When you have a lead you try different things. You don't have to worry about a mistake costing you the game.
We nor the coaching staff will know when that series of play calling will be exactly what will work against another team. I thought we played extremely smart football. My only thought was that Howard was a bit anxious on the short routes. Threw some bullets when a little finesse on the pass would have been what was needed.. First game Adrenalin , that will settle . Thought we played a well disciplined game. One thing I noticed. Number 5, I feel stupid his name wont come to mind now. But did you notice on running plays, for a true freshman his downfield blocking was exceptional. We have an AA here. He can do what he wants and has nowhere to go but to get better. I am certainly not sure that Dana said he is the fastest player he ever coach. Unless he has a bad memory and doesn't remember Tavon. Overall., first game, nice speed and reaction on D. And their attention to detail and discipline was impressive. Let's see how it translates with a passing or multiple formation offence, Its a great day to be a Mountaineer....

It's just common sense to throw out the game plan, with a secure lead, in the first game of the year. People like Chas and Fat Milk will play fantasy coach after every game, win or lose. Every play that doesn't move the chains, or score, is "questionable" after the fact. It's called football.

Hey, Shipyard, how are you doing? Haven't seen you on the board much lately...just wondering how everything is going in your world?

It's all good, pretty great actually. I've been here occasionally, just haven't posted since the new board took over. I'm excited about this season (as always) so my self imposed exile is over. I'm still old gold and blue through and through. I'll be annoying the "realists" again, just like old times. Hope all is good with you GoWVU. I put my real life pic up there so if you see me at a game, say hey.

Maybe Holgs was trying to develop his passing attack with young receivers? He, THE COACH. has said repeatedly, leading up to the season, that his QB and receivers needed to work on timing.

It seemed clear fairly early that our defense was dialed in on their offense. Why not work on the timing issue in a real game?
I guarantee you that Jovon Durante remembers the ball he let get passed him at the goal line.

At this point, as Ship said, "It's all good."

The Liberty game will also probably feature some practice sessions. Just let things develop one game at a time.

If Holgs had done a better job calling the plays..............WV would have beat Georgia Southern 144-0. We need to get rid of Holgs....................right now................Son! I am calling for his head. Right now..................ole Son!

I agree with everything you say here. Except the Howard remark. I think adjusting to game speed took him a half. But he is getting there. First game jitters, new receivers to throw to, and a new offensive line to hide behind had to be playing havoc in between his ears. He seemed to settle down and do a better job the second half. And it'll only get better as the season goes along ( I hope).

anytime our QB sees man-coverage.......... go routes should be called from the line. We are too fast and our QB has too strong of an arm not to take that chance.

Just think, if the play calling was better we could have won by 100. Then people would be griping that Dana has no class. I'm as big a Dana critic as anyone. But this thread is crazy.

We won 44-0 by playing very vanilla schemes, both offense and defense.

That's a great thing. Expect more of the same vs Liberty. Why give teams any special looks unless absolutely necessary? Against these teams that we are suppose to win and not being conference teams, I strongly support running vanilla schemes especially when they are working. Our defense ate up GSU in basic packages, no exotic schemes.

I for one think this is a very welcome sight. Under Stew and Dana (to this point) we haven't done a good job of putting these types of games away. We've had to pull out all of the stops just to secure victories far too many times. Being able to beat a decent team without showing anything outside our base offense bodes well for us. Not only because it means we are out executing the other team, but also it leaves the wrinkles and counter plays in the bag for conference foes. And with those speedy receivers one play that the defense gets confused on could very well be a touchdown.
