Memphis can't compete with any sec program. That was my point.

Historically they haven't, but they did beat OM by 2 scores this year, and would likely beat most of the SEC East teams this year. If Fuente was there for 5-7 more years, who is to say if they can or can't compete with SEC schools, academically probably not. But if they are able to hang on to their current coach, they might. Much like Louisville, they are a place kids looking for a 2nd chance lands, end up with kids that were questionable being able to qualify coming out of HS. I think UK is much like Bama, UK in BB and Bama in FB. Bama fans live and die with their football program, head will roll if it isn't dominant, while some are die hard BB fans and want a UK type BB program, they get overwhelmed by the football fans and their voice isn't heard. Same at UK except its BB that rules, some fans want elite football, but not enough to make enough noise for things to change. Historically both schools have been dominant in their chosen sport while the other sport has had some good seasons they were seldom and the good coaches moved on to other programs. Maybe thats unfair, but its how each of the programs mentioned is seen my many other fanbases.

Let's not forget what conference they are in...

I suspect that if roles were reversed, and CMS was at Houston or Memphis and we had somebody else maybe even Herman or Fuente...we'd be hollering for Stoops right now...

I'd say it's a lot easier to turn Memphis and Houston around in the AAC than it is to turn UK around in the SEC...

You wouldn't have to leave the city of Houston to put together a pretty good Big 12 squad, let alone one that could compete in the AAC...easy access to west Louisiana talent as well...

A lot of talent in the Memphis area as well...and they are with in 8 hrs drive of Dallas, Shreveport, Houston, Jackson, Mobile, Pensacola, Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, Montgomery...they can essentially get to every major recruiting region in the south and pitch a location that mom, pop, and granny can drive to friday night and get back from before noon mass on sunday...
If the roles were reversed, Stoops would still need to figure out how to get 11 men on the field....even at Memphis or Houston. Memphis and Houston coaches have demonstrated they have the basics down, so I doubt we would be screaming for Stoops.

Memphis can't compete with any sec program. That was my point.

But they can, they can compete with Vandy, almost every year except maybe the JF years, How can you say they can't compete with SEC programs when right now they are clearly better than quite a few of them? If they lose their coach, very likely, they can't, but right now they would be a mid level SEC team, the only teams in the East that would likely beat them are UF and UT. Its hard to say they can't compete when they are better than half the conference right now. They would probably beat 2-4 West teams too, I know they can beat one of them. I know I don't want them in a bowl game.

If you are talking about taking second chance players, Cam Newton was one booted from an SEC school, returned to a different one, won a BCS, won a Heisman. So it works out pretty well sometimes for those guys.

The only reason Memphis can't compete with SEC teams is because their coach leaves for a bigger name, its not because their team can't play.

I'd give Stoops five years then evaluate.
It's a great time for some these "hot" market value coaches from the AAC , Fuente(Memphis), Rhule(Temple) and Herman (Houston).
With USC,Miami, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Mizzou and Maryland to compete in a bidding war with.

You don't hear much about Navy's coach Niumatalolo, the Midshipmen are 16th ranked with one loss to Norte Dame.
Impressive considering it has to be hard to recruit a top players for the academy.

Re Boom surprised no one has mentioned his loss of speed. Thought he was gone when he broke the run then he got to about the 20 and it looked like he was carrying a piano on his back. He had another run where his legs just left him. Puzzling.
He may have some sort of heart/lung problem. He gets gassed way to easy for a young athlete in tip top shape (according to his work ethic and weight lifting feats).

If we do hire Houston's coach, I hope he brings his Special Teams Coordinator with him. I have been told he's one of the best in the business.
