I think this team will come together by conference. Not sure the fan base has that level of patience.
I want to be optimistic but they’ve shown nothing so far. And bringing in a big who struggles offensively doesn’t bring me a lot of hope.
This group just never has a game flow about them and idk our missing pieces are on the bench.

We could have won this game if... Aberdeen had not tried to play hero ball in 2nd half. He played well in first half, couldn't hit anything in 2nd and put up the most shots on the team, after stinking it up against MSU. Pope should have run plays to get Chandler open for a three, they were tight on Chandler the whole game and he didn't get hardly a descent look from three. Pope should have encouraged Aberdeen, Chandler and Oweh to drive to get fouled. Pope should have made any player who didn't want to block out and get defensive rebound walk home. Sad that he can't coach toughness in regard to rebounding and lets other teams punk us on the board.

Yeah, I’m with you. I was optimistic when Mark was hired. He said all the right things, and understands the fanbase and tradition, however, he touted this team as a title contender.

Uh, either he overestimated this bunch, or just can’t coach them.

Now, we‘re dealing with mysterious injuries like we did with Crapapari. That’s just unacceptable.

We‘ve played three teams with a pulse so far this season, and have lost all three. And honestly, have looked bad in all 3 teams.

To lose to a mediocre UNC team at home, is unforgivable.
This season was lost in May and June. This is literally a roster full of roll players.

I don’t think many posters understand the ego of a college coach at a major program. The coach always thinks they can fix the issue, they just need more time.

Barnhart won't even be around to make this decision. He's gone within 12 months. You don't burn UK for $38 million and keep your job.
I wish you were right but it is more likely that Mitch is going to “retire” into his new role @ 800k per year, pick his successor and the incestuous good ole boy way will continue at UK.

Pope for whatever reason, inability to evaluate talent or inability to land talent, simply isn’t getting the job done especially given the resources he has.

Zero recruits for next year is scary as hell.

Cal left on his own and saved us a giant amount of money by doing so. I think it was his way of saying “sorry” for screwing things up his last several years.

Pope needs to back away some from his seemingly complete reliance on analytics and make decisions based more on what his head and heart tell him to do. Time for some old fashioned tough love before it's too late.

no AD is going to fire a coach in his second year after making the NCAA tournament, Pope would have to tank tremendously, like closer to Kenny Payne levels to get fired after this year.

He won’t be fired this year and this isn’t over. I don’t know what’s going on, and he’s going to be given a fair opportunity, but this happens into next season and recruiting isn’t showing up, I don’t think he’d make it to year 4.

I don't see it happening, in 3 weeks I'm assuming we'll have Lowe and JQ on the court and I'm hoping Garrison is selling popcorn at the end of the bench. I don't think this team will have a miracle run but I think he'll have a team that gets a bye in the SEC tournament and wins its first game of the NCAA tournament.

You don't get fired for that and Pope isn't walking away. He'll have a mea culpa with the fans at the end of the season, change his recruiting style and go all in on fewer players hoping to retain 2-3 core from this team.

That's my prediction anyways

I also think everyone is underestimating how well liked Mark is by the old guard. I think he has some rope, especially if Lowe and JQ come in and make a difference.
Aaand also true. They’re all going to wait and see what happens when we’re full strength. Maybe this was a one off due to injuries and some turmoil. They will 100% wait to find out.

It’s time to see it. He needs to resign after this season. You don’t need a full year to see this disaster.

I’ve got tickets for Nashville, can’t say I’m looking forward to going now. I need to check if it’s too late to cancel my hotel lol, could have been such a fun wkend but going to watch the zags bigs dominate us im not looking forward to.
I have tickets as well. Looking forward to it. Dont let a basketball game (if we lose) ruin your weekend. Too many fun things to do in Nashville.

Just can’t give it up yet we need him to work. But at this point, results are what they are. If Mark thinks he’s in over his head he needs to get out himself and save his own career.

I get the injuries and turmoil, but the roster construction is far worse than I thought. They couldn’t have looked any better in practice when he was touting this as a team that could win the title. I don’t believe Kam was lighting the nets up. He can barely hit the rim at times. Chandler isn’t UK material either unless it’s a bench guy right now. And Garrison? He gets worse game to game. He’s not a good basketball player, he’s just tall.

I don’t see the analytical guru that would not make these kinds of mistakes man. But I’m holding on, I still think a major turnaround can happen due to this being the NIL era.

as someone who grew up in Tennessee that went to Nashville constantly, have all of that city you want. Place is Atlanta now with wall to wall traffic. If you like bars I guess you’re in luck. Most overrated city in the country by miles. Growing up in the 90’s and early 2,000’s it was the best kept secret, now it’s turned into a hell hole with high crime traffic and imports from all over. Nashvilles charm and tradition is gone. Infrastructure isn’t able to sustain the boom by foreigners and outsiders. And watch your car the entire time you’re there, it’s the top spot for car theft.

Most people in Tennessee avoid it like Memphis now. I’ve got family and friends moving out as we speak. Apparently they don’t like 4 hour commutes to work. Literally, 4 hours.

Honest question…I wonder if Pearl would come out of retirement if the job was offered to him? Coaching at UK with all those resources would have to be enticing
I’d be fairly certain that’s a yes but I don’t know him.

It's a different game if you got JQ and Diubate out there with Lowe.

💯.

Anybody saying anything else is just hyperbole and overreaction.

If They suck when they got all three of those guys out there then I will buy into this team sucks.
Imagine if UNC had a healthy in his prime MJ!! Talk about a different game.

Normally I would say Pope will be given at minimum 3 years but I’m not sure now since he was given 22 million to build this roster. NIL may change things. Not sure how that’s going to work.

Are you acting like I’ve never been there? Thanks for the advice that I didn’t need. My daughter lives there and we love it. And you do know there are more areas other than Broadway, right? Geez, didn’t know Nashville could trigger someone so much.

Some very angry raging people. There were you suck chants at the end of the game, people trashing the team hard. Have to say, I thought Mark couldn’t have coached a worse game. The Oweh substitution, putting Jasper in at the worst time for a freshman like him, officiating looked pitiful from my seats lower end lower bowl, but damn. How did that look on TV? Aside from 8% shooting?

I’m afraid this is likely to derail Mark. You can get by sucking a little year 2, but not this. This would derail any coach. It’s going to be tough for him to recruit now, alumni are likely already talking. hate it for him. On a positive note, Rupp was absolutely rocking tonight. When Will came out it was electric. That is Rupp at its finest, and everytime they were about to explode even more, we missed the 3.
I gave my lower level tickets away. Too late during the week for me since I am still working. I am going to the Gonzaga game in Nashville- so I'll be taking my punishment soon lol.

I sincerely do feel for Mark Pope. I like his passion and enthusiasm. I love his attitude. But he got a bunch of role players on this team. Look, they're not terrible, they're just not very good. You don't need 10 elite players but you've got to have a couple alphas. You've got to have a couple elite players at this level or you're gonna struggle. This is UK. We bring out everyone's best. We don't "Get By." We don't get days off or taken lightly, ever. But Mark recruited this and they are not a good team. It's gonna be a LONG season for Mark Pope, maybe his worst ever.
Mark got exactly what he wanted. $5MM/ year- for 6 years now (thanks to the stupid Sweet 16 auto extension). I don't feel sorry for him at all. Guarantee he begged for this job . Also- didn't he get something like a $3.5MM raise lol?

Yeah except probably ponying up to fire Stoops and hire a coordinator will probably ensure that we are stuck with Pope no matter how bad this goes. Boosters aren’t gonna just keep dropping millions upon millions right after they paid big for NIL in two sports and then had assist in a buyou (which thankfully isn’t having to be paid upfront) and now put together NIL money to make FB a success. I bet you we are stuck no matter what now with Pope and this is exactly why I literally begged anyone that would listen to please just wait until we at least know what we have in Pope. Now we are stuck.

I knew it! Lol

I posted recently that someone would find some kind of way to blame Stoops for how bad basketball is or will be. Lmao. "WE.ARE.UK!"

On tv we just look like a below average team. It's hard for me to see a tweak that can make this team a contender.
Getting and keeping a point guard in the starting lineup will help.

Getting a top 10 NBA draft prospect healthy and in the lineup will help.

Getting Mo the Rebounder healthy and back in the lineup will help.

Sitting Garrison forever will help.

Figuring out WTF is wrong with Kam's shot (he was supposedly brought in to shoot 3s, but he's never close) will help.

If we get all of those in place by the end of this month, we *might* have some hope. Right now, though, we run no offense and look like a bad Calipari team with everyone looking to "get theirs".

Yes. Recruiting was (and is still) one of the biggest concerns, Well....and he never won a regular season conference championship or conference tourney championship....or an ncaa tournament game. Matter of fact, he did worse than the coach before him (at byu). But he is now guarantied $30MM + - for that stellar resume.

Can you believe that the head coach at Kentucky didn't get one high school recruit to sign? I mean you and I were both still concerned about the Pope hire even after everyone else was on board. As against it as I (we) were, I never thought he couldn't get a MFing recruit to sign in the early signing period. How is that even possible at UK?

This has been said and shown repeatedly. You cannot stay at Kentucky or any SEC program and suck. It’s never going to happen and it will never happen. They will absolutely can him and very fast if he is not producing. You will never see a coach at UK allowed to stay if he is no good. It’s something you don’t have to worry about. I’m not guessing here either, trust me they will pull it and they will do it for very specific reasons. That buyout for Stoops isn’t even an issue.

You cannot just tank football or it will hurt You in basketball and it will hurt your brand. This isn’t 1990, you can’t do it. Keeping Stoops isn’t something feasible it’s not that it should have happened it’s that it had to change.

This university and their boosters are mega wealthy. That buyout for stoops isn’t as bad as many think it is. It’s actually not bad at all, 30 million isn’t a stone in the pond to this university or its boosters especially over time. They stand to lose much, much more if they retain bad coaches. You can’t have an apathetic fanbase. And many of those guys care deeply about this program. Just as much as you and I.

If Mark Pope cannot win here he will be replaced and you will see more money poured over this program and that will happen over and over until it’s fixed. You will not see Kentucky allow bad coaches to remain in their seats because of a contract. I really don’t know how many people have to think this before it’s shown over and over for them to realize. No contract will keep a coach at UK if he is not producing. Won’t happen at any SEC program in football and sure won’t happen here in basketball. They said it for Calipari - nope. They said it for Stoops - nope. They can say it now after stoops, the answer will be no.
Man, I want to believe this, but Calipari was here a few years past when he should have been gone, and if he hadn't flirted with Arkansas, he would have still been here at least last year.
