That season was a little before my memories as a fan. As someone who has watched that game a couple times from replays, i genuinely have no idea how traumatic that game would have been to watch live. I don’t have anything to compare it to, really. Jealous of all fans who got to live through early Pitino and remember it well. Also jealous of all Cats fans who were diehard in the late 40s, early 50s.
That Laettner shot was deeply disturbing to live through. Part of the meaning of my handle. But the whole rest of the game was breathtaking to behold as it happened, as each second ticked off the clock and we were still playing at or above their level. Which should have been impossible by the mythos of the day. It was exactly like watching your best friend go toe-to-toe with Mike Tyson and actually have him on the ropes instead of come out of the ring in a bodybag.

While true, we should have never been in that position to begin with. The reason Laettner had an open shot was because our guys were absolutely scared to death to even breathe on the guy. Would’ve been whistled for a foul.
I would have rather him shot FT with that pressure than that shot. He could not miss that game. Force the refs to call it.

I couldn't even reply to the comments about the NC 4 corner game in 77 yesterday. GGggrrrr!! I have despised NC since and think Dean Smith should have gotten a lifetime ban for bringing that crap into college basketball. For most of my adult life I thought I became a serious UK fan in the 78 season. But I recently read a recap of the 77 season and dang I remembered all of it. I must have blocked it from my memory.

Now for the 92 game...unlike many of you all I still don't really care for Pitino for about 5 main reasons and that inbounds play against Duke is one of the top ones.

The fouls were 28 on UK and 23 on Duke. I could see whining and getting your panties in a twist if it was something like 5 fouls to 30, but c'mon. I fully expect someone to tell me that the fouls that were called on UK should not have been fouls and or that the fouls called on UK came at worst times, blah, blah, blah.

Lmao how many times have you watched that game?! I just about bet you watched it the one time, live. I’ve watched it 4/5 times since then. I reckon Cawood Ledford was “whining” too then. He mentioned the terrible officiating several times throughout that game. The foul numbers don’t always tell the whole story.

I have watched it once, I will never watch it again. So the officiating was only horrible toward UK. So how should the fouls have been? 5 to 23 in favor of UK? 1 to 23 in favor of UK? Lets just say the fouls were UK 20 and Duke 23 and Duke still won, would some UK fans still by crying into their little pity pot about the officials? I bet that if UK had won some Duke fans would also be whining about the fouls. There just always will be some of those kind of fans who need something to blame to make themselves feel better.

Only thing I can say is to go back and watch it again. I didn’t even realize it until I rewatched the game. Literally, Cawood said “they’re just not gonna call a foul on duke.” He said that a few times during the game, verbatim. We all know Cawood wouldn’t have stated as such without merit. He was as straight of a shooter as they come. The officiating was criminal.

By the way, duke shot 11 more FTs than UK did. Not to mention, they got the hot hand off the floor asap, Pelphrey. Both fouls were absolutely BOGUS! Thought Pitino was gonna lose his mind!

That ain’t how refs tip the scales. Has nothing to do with # of fouls.

im not saying it was totally rigged but the refs made it abundantly clear that ANY 50/50 call was going in the Dukies’ favor. They were able to stymie a lot of our momentum that way

Wasn’t that Cawood’s last season on the mic? Maybe he’d just ran out of f*cks to give by that point. His commentary is VERY blunt during that game, hahaha

Meh, I just never am the type to blame the refs. If we had won that game, what would you say to any Duke fans that might have said that UK got away with a lot and should have been called for more fouls and the refs cost them the game?

There are a lot of us on here that aren't normally "blame the refs" guys; but that game was so obvious! To say it wasn't biased is just trying to get on this board and stir the pot.

Im sure Im in the minority on this... but the most crushing loss in my life was the 77 regional final against UNC.

They got up early, went to that pussified 4 corners offense in the 2nd half, and that was the ballgame.

I FVCKING HATE UNCHEATS.
I can imagine that being heartbreaking, especially not being able to do anything about it. Best rule changes ever outlawing that BS.

i just don’t see how anyone can ignore the impact officiating can have on a game. there is no argeuing it. they can and have had more impact on games than players at times. And they have very little accountability.

more than anything else it makes me question why i’m bothering watching.

That Duke loss was crushing. Like one I won’t let go. Along with 84 GT. 84 is my all time favorite team. 2015 Wisc. 97 Arizona. 2017 UNC.
For me, nothing will ever be as crushing as the Texas Western game ... it took me a good while to get over it. I was 13 years old and watched the game in my bedroom on a 13" B&W Admiral Television that I bought with money from my paper route. I cried myself to sleep that night ...

Side note: The second toughest Wildcat event for me was when I learned that Wes Unseld signed with Louisville. I was 11 years old and couldn't believe it. It really tore me up, as I was very excited about his coming to UK and was expecting it to happen. Wes Unseld was unreal !!

Exactly and I am certain a lot of them either have grudges against certain teams or coaches and/or bet on games themselves.

I cried myself to sleep after 97, I loved Derek Anderson and he was my favorite Cat ever. Seeing him not play and losing after Epps tried to save us, just a couple Nazr FT’s. All we needed.

I just don't see anyone can blame the refs for almost every loss. Fans of every team do it. The worst are UL fans I have seen them complain about the refs when they win and the other team was called for more fouls. I just find it a loser mindset to whine about the refs.

Saying poor officiating can never be the cause of a loss is just as bad as saying they’re responsible for every loss.

If one is a loser mindset the other is willful ignorance. The truth is somewhere in between.

We were there too. When we went up 4 points with 3 or 4 minutes to go I was sure we had it. 🏀

That Sunday was Easter so we sold our Monday tickets to some Wisconsin fans at our hotel and went home.

Problem is, garbage foul calls put our best players on the bench, duke's best players got to play the full game.

The cherry on top was when Laettner stomped on the chest of a UK player that was on the floor. That should have, at minimum, given UK 2 free throws and the ball. You mean to tell me the refs didn’t see that? Come on.

You're acting like we're saying every loss is the refs fault, that's not the case.

The calls in that game and the 2017 E8 game, were as ridiculous as I've ever seen in a high end NCAAT game.

Refs are human and I feel like they bought into the duke hype train in 92 and gave them the Jordan treatment. When you're great, you get the calls, is what it is, but calling it out doesn't make us whiny.

I’m not saying every UK loss is the ref’s fault, all I want is for games to be called fairly, whatever the rightful outcome.

But there have been occasions where it is obvious things are not right. We fans were told to shut up and accept 2015, even though we knew there were shenanigans. But fans—and even the media, at first—could not remain silent after the travesty of 2017 (sharing a common denominator from 2015, 2011, 2005) .

Here’s a few older Threads that highlight some curiosities and leaves me with questions.

Why would NCAA assign a noted Cal criticizer to officiate UK in the tournament? And who made the assignment?
https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/cal-vs-officials.4935052/#post-103809106

(Watch the linked video below, where Jamie Luckie is instructing other officials) Why is it acceptable for officials to “give the little guy more latitude, knowing they’re (i.e., the refs) are the difference between a (i.e., the little guy’s) 20 point loss or 40 point loss?” Why is it acceptable to mirror calls? Why is it acceptable to call a game differently in the final two or four minutes than you have the rest of the game?

A deep dive into factors surrounding the common denominator for UK’s final games—heartbreaking losses—in 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017

Agreed! I’ll never get over that game either! Mercer was about 70%, due to fatigue of carrying us against Minnesota the game prior. The BEST Minnesota team in their history.

That AZ game leaves a real bad taste in my mouth for several reasons. Since the old timer above wants to bring up “numbers”, let’s do numbers for that AZ game, shall we?! UK free throws 9-17. AZ free throws 34-41! AZ MADE TWICE AS MANY FTS THAN UK EVEN ATTEMPTED. Lmao unreal!

Meh, he was in love with Boston. He was leaving no matter what.
One could say you don't leave when there is unfinished business and after that title game loss, there was plenty of unfinished business.
I believe you’re right. Had it been any other franchise other than Boston, it might’ve been different. Hell, they offered him the keys to the entire franchise. Would’ve been hard to turn down, no matter who it was.

For the folks who were online and actively following the behind the scenes in ‘97, was John Calipari a consideration after Rick left? He had kicked tail at UMass for years at that point and had a lot of Pitino comparisons by the media while coaching one of Pitino’s former schools.
