Most people are not for seeing much pt for him next year from what I read, depending on who finishes out that is class, but wasn’t he rated a top 35 kid last year? Never knew much about his game but just wondering why he has fallen off the map.

Imo if he proves he can shoot and hit the 3 ball consistently he’ll play. Just my thought

Alex Murphy 2.0 sadly hope I’m wrong though but I thought that from the day he committed

In the sense that he won't get much burn or he's not that good? Cause Murphy wasn't very good and that showed at Florida.

The coaches can only do so much for these guys, it's on them to improve during the offseason and prove their worthy of the time. If Baker hits the weights, shows the effort on D in practices and proves he can reliably hit open threes, he'll definitely play. If not, it's not on the coaches to play him due to his HS ranking.

I liked the kids attitude throughout the year and would love to see him put the time into his game to show major improvement and get some time.

I’ve got to ask, what improvement should he make off all three games eight minutes we saw him play in?
He evidently was doing something right for the staff to ok the removal of his redshirt with only four regular season games left.
In the very limited time we saw him on the court his defense didn’t look bad for a kid who only practiced most the year.
Let’s not forget the kid reclassified and came to Duke early.
There is no way anyone can make the assumption the kid can’t play at the college level given the small limited time he saw on the court.

I think the responsibility would reside in the fact that they identified him as a Duke caliber player and gave him one of the most prestigious scholarships on CBB. Scouting is not only about about the athletic side but also cultural fit, work ethic, system fit, etc and the ability to project those qualities over the time they are at Duke. I think this is where the staff may not be as strong as others and it has cost them on the depth side. Great coaches can get caught up recruiting based on rankings too (see Urban Myers last years at UF)

Improvement and development are about 99.9% of what you do outside of an actual game. Neither you or I magically become better players if we get in a Duke game. Same with these kids. You improve by never stopping to put in work.

Also, it's mixed on why the redshirt was lifted. People have said it was Joey and his family who approached the staff about giving it a go. What's true? I don't know. Like many, though, I also don't understand lifting the redshirt, but what is done, is done.

Lastly, I agree with the ending of your post. People are only down on Joey because of what they didn't see from him, rather than what they did see. Just because of how his first season ultimately played out, doesn't mean he can't play. He's a good player who I think still will provide really good things at Duke....at least, I hope so.

Joey would have been a Mc'Donalds AA had he stayed in the class of 2019. He also lit it up in Canada last summer. I have no idea why the redshirt was lifted because I think the staff knew Zion was coming back. (Would have made sense if Zion never returned) My only guess is Joey doesn't see himself as a 4 year player, he was a 5-star and all.

I don't think talent was the reason Joey didn't see the court much last year, I think strength/growing into your body is the reason for Joey. This summer will be the biggest summer of his life. If he fills out, he will play good minutes next year.

People I’ve talked too from the Fayetteville area some that have seen him play and know him say he wanted to contribute and it was a mutual thought to go ahead and pull the red shirt by Joeyand the staff.

I just hate when people make assumptions this early about players and there is nothing truly to go off of on Baker. He barely saw the court and unless people were at practice knowing what he can do is clearly in the eyes of the staff and him.

I just always thought it was stupid pulling the red shirt that late in the season.

Not sure if this has been posted, but I haven’t seen it. Short video interview and a little more information in the article with words from Joey himself.

I think it’s too early to speculate his role next year. Players can make substantial improvement in the off-season. If that happens, I think he’ll see minutes. The only thing we know for a fact is that whatever level his game was operating on this season wasn’t good enough to log minutes. We’ll be highly talented next year so if we see him next year.

We don’t know this either. Baker had four regular season games to play in before the ACC tourney( he played in two) and the NCAA tourney he played against South Dakota St.
As far as next year I get practice will be competitive because everyone on the roster but at sf is where Baker will see the most of his minutes and the four.

I think it’s a very safe assumption. If he was good enough to log minutes (non-junk) he would have done so. I don’t think K is just keeping him on the bench for decoration. We haven’t seen of him for all of us to personally judge that aspect. IMO it’s pretty clear that the coaches have that view.

I agree but rewatch his interview when he said,” the coaches said they needed him to play and asked him to remove the red shirt.”
Coaches wouldn’t have done that imo, unless they believed he was ready or were worried Zion would be out longer. Either way a course with only four games left it would be hard to establish a role on a team when you’ve only been playing in practice. I like what Biocardi said. These kids are athletes and stars at their high schools and very few adjust right away at the college level.

So six guys will be back that can play in Jones, Bolden, White, DeLaurier, O’Connell and Baker. Sounds like five guys coming in that can play Hurt, Moore, Ellis, Carey and Stanley. So who is K’s top seven?

You are leaving out Jordan. Because of his defense I think he will get some minutes.
Looks like we may be 12 deep. Maybe needs to Coach like Huggy Bear and full court press the whole game playing 10-11 deep,

If Moore was moved to the two I hate it for the opposing Sg sf . He’s got strength and should baker put on some muscle with his brief defense we did see I could see a full court press utilized. We know what Tre and Goldwire can do with the press.

Be a cold day in you know where before K explores that option.....Although we have shown flashes of a good press at times. (Louisville). May be the only way to keep all the troops happy! OFC

Here’s the thing about the redshirt to me. I don’t agree it should have been burned, but the reality is this isn’t a debate until the 2023-24 season.

I like Tre, Moore, Baker, Hurt, and Carey line up. We can mix and match Javin, Jack, Alex, Jordan, and Boogie. I hope Bolden comes back but I have a nagging feeling he moves on.

I don’t want to say it’s a win/win for Duke but the downside is much larger for Joey. For Duke if Joey lives up to his ranking he likely is not around for year 4 anyways. If he underachieves the scholarship can now be off the books and redistributed. For Joey he has now lost a year of eligibility which makes transferring less desirable if he doesn’t see a path to playing time or if he requires more time to develop and gets overrecruited.
