Bryant didn't make Gazillions. His first contract at Bama was 10 year at $17,500 a year. His last contract which made him the highest paid coach at the time was $425,000. He was also the AD. Interestingly, he always insisted that his salary be $1 less than what the school President made because he didn't feel that a coach should make more money than the President of the University.

I’m wondering if he knew he had issues and that’s why he retired. As I recall and could be wrong but wasn’t his retirement kind of unexpected?

I think he was forced to retire because he had reached mandatory retirement age.
