I like it. I also went to SHU law and have a ton of respect for Dean Hobbs. He knows how to fundraise and deal with the NJ/NY media and that's very important for our next AD. We need someone who will clean up the mess but isn't an outsider to NJ. He knows the game, he knows the media and he knows the law.
It says he accepted on Friday. So a lot going on behind the scenes. We have no idea how long the AD search has been going on. Quite possibly since the suspensions started months ago....

I am happy there is no politically correct drawn out process. Where student council pretends to ask important questions. Then Kate Sweeney railroads everyone. We got our guy now lets move on.
I suspect that may be the reason why Julie Hermann had not spoken to the media for so long. I would guess that Barchi told her to keep quiet because in the back of his mind he figured that she was gone and he didn't want her speaking for Rutgers Athletics any more.
Doing some research on the guy, his pros list is growing. At the very least I see why Barchi made this move. He covers a lot of bases.
That is, to say the least, a peculiar statement about Hermann. He literally says nothing bad about her or what she did as AD, but he fires her anyway. (Contrast that to what he says about Flood, where he cites "struggles on the field" and "several off the field issues.") Assuming there isn't something bad in the investigation about her (in which case Barchi will look pretty stupid, and since he presumably knows what's in the report, I doubt he would let that happen), it's hard to read this as anything but "major donors said they wouldn't give if she stayed."
I have mixed feelings about the decision to hire Hobbs as the permanent AD. Compared to the people in the last round - including Hermann - he does not have a lot of experience, and he literally has no experience with a D-I football program. That troubles me, and raises the question of whether this was a political hire more than anything else. On the other hand, making a permanent hire now simplifies things and avoids the possibility of hiring a football coach the permanent AD wouldn't like or the chance that the process of hiring an AD would eliminate good candidates for the football job because it would take too long.

Since nothing obviously horrible has come to light in the past few months, to me this means that she likely had a not-so-great role in the rumored "institutional control" issues being investigated - and which are obviously part of the reason Barchi hired Hobbs. As he said, "I set out to find an interim Director of Athletics who could stabilize the Department before launching a national search..." That to me screams internal/institutional control issues, especially since Barchi in his letter, then highlights Hobbs's legal and ethical qualifications.
What does an AD really do for football? They just need to hire the right coach and get the hell out of the way.
stop - no one was ever getting fired w/o a big payday -- some people really need to learn how the world works. Adults with lawyers don't just go away when then are fire "for cause"....
Here again is what I mean by double standard. There were detractors of JH because she had supposedly had no experience in football/basketball although she came from an athletic department built from the ground up.

Is a political appointment any better for the success of our AD than a supposed PC hire. He's had all of 2 years working as an AD at SHU a school without football. Nothing about his record screams a guy who can build us a top level AD.

That would justify firing her.
But, really, it's hard to imagine. Barchi says "I want you to fire Flood." She says "I think we should give him another year." Barchi says, "It's not really a suggestion." At that point, well, there's no reason to sacrifice yourself when he's going to be gone anyway. It's not like there's some big principle at stake here.
Yes Hobbs has ties to Christy but he also has ties with Cody who is a democrat, Don't think it hurts to have someone who is politically savvy/connected and can obviously hold his own with the media, he also raised a lot of money when he was at the SHU law school. I like that this was done decisively and obviously with a plan in place, let's see what plays out moving forward relative to a new coach.
My concern is that this means that Christie is bossing this whole thing.
So a Christie crony, associated with ethics of all strong points for the gov, is our new AD and people are happy? It sounds like an appointment to make the higher ups happy and silence critics and little else.

Completely off base and misinformed. Hobbs is a Democrat. He was asked in the wake of bridgegate to serve in a part time capacity as ombudsman. He has no previous ties to Christie. Got it? Do a little research before you spout off.

Hobbs' First Order of Business: Closing the political arm of Christie's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, which Bridgegate witnesses Bill Stepien and Bridget Kelly ran. Documents indicate that employees of this office were involved in both wooing mayors so they'd endorse Christie and punishing mayors who didn't support him, on the taxpayer's dime.
How He'll Handle Whistle-blowers: "I'll be a resource where people can go" with concerns, he said, or if "they need guidance for established best practices."
Other Ethics Issues He'll Address: Top-level Christie officials will undergo ethics training, a chief ethics officer will be appointed, and a policy will be created on employees' use of personal email accounts for government work.
