It's odd to see some of these guys lacking the 200+ matches we've seen before. Covid took away another 40-50 victories from so many...

The days of winning 50+ matches/year, for 4 years, are long gone. Who was the last to do it just one year? Kindig's JR year?

Anyway, it's actually 20 wins each, and the virus probably has less to do with it than reducing wear/tear in general (and maybe travel budgets).

Here is the 2019 Dapper Dan Team USA lineup. Comparing just the boys' roster, 2019 averaged 118 wins, 2023 averages 98 wins.

I guess I am dating myself a bit! How about those Minnesota kids from years past with 206-3 records. I guess you get that when the varsity clock starts in 7th grade!

I assume the heavyweight is the brother of football recruit Alex Birchmeier.

Mr Birchmeier (I think) posted here that Jon had some injuries and medically retired from wrestling. He wrestled out the gate and had a nice true freshman season. I believe he’s graduating from the Academy this year.
I think I read he was 16-9 his freshman year.

Any idea where to find the Pa lineup?

I could be wrong, but the records in the original post do not include this season(2023). It says it at the bottom with an *. Barr and Davis just won their 4th state title and the post doesn’t reflect that. So, the career records are low for that reason also.

PA states are this upcoming weekend. The invites come after that. I think the expectation is a Rubber Match between Barr & Waynesburg's Rocco Welsh.

This is correct -- it's very rare for any invites to go out before states, and when it's done those are returning champs who are overwhelming favorites to repeat (think the Altons or Marsteller).

But with the PIAA brackets released, we can make some reasonable guesses for this year:
- 121 Nasdeo
- 127 Kilkeary
- 133 AA Pepe-Johnson winner (likely Pepe)
- 139 Barnhart (Malvern Prep)
- 145 Church
- 152 Watters
- 160 MacKay
- 172 Welsh (confirmed)
- 189 ??
- 215 Sasso (or he goes 189)
- 285 AA Robell-Ulrich winner (likely Robell)

Sasso might be the only SR to reach the finals at 189 or 215, in AAA or AA. Whichever weight he goes at Dapper Dan, could see a Preps kid at the other (215 has better SR Preps candidates).

What weight is Church going at VT? Freshman Caleb Henson looked really good while beating Jackson Arrington in the 149 ACC Championships. He would be tough to beat out for the spot.

VT will likely need help at 141 if he can get there.

Nasdeo and Kasak both named to Team PA.

PSU matchups:
- 121: Nasdeo vs. Marc-Anthony McGowan (Princeton)
- 127: Davis vs. Vinny Kilkeary (anOSU)
- 139: Kasak vs. Ryder Block (Iowa)
- 172: Barr vs. Rocco Welsh (anOSU)

Kasak vs Block. Didn’t see that coming. Iowa board already complaining about the matchup. Saying deck is stacked against Block. These are some really good matchups this year.

Is this only on Flo?

Two matches involving future Penn State vs. future Ohio State wrestlers. Interesting factoid: Both future OSU wrestlers are from PA.

Interesting comments on the Iowa board. Love when they say they will beat the PSU wrestler once they get in the Iowa room. What the hell have they been watching the last 12 years?!

Davis "lost" 5-2 to Kilkeary on a late 4-pt illegal cutback that God knows how the ref missed.

Definitely don't conclude Kilkeary was better from the score.

I don’t have an issue with any of these kids losing here. The future of the sport is in good hands with these kids across many teams. The losses will serve as fuel for hard work and rivalries may develop as a result, which is also good for the sport going forward. As far as the PSU guys, we all know that all of these kids will most likely improve during their time at PSU. Nobody gets the most out of his guys in March like Cael. The next few years should be fun.

I just saw the ending of the Barr-Welsh match. Seemed like Welsh gave Barr a little extra shove in the back after the match ended. I had heard Welsh had a bit of a reputation. I guess that reaffirmed it.

Waynesburg has a reputation for that stuff.

See also Church vs. Gaj PA state finals match.
