Saw a play in Reds game in last couple days that I'm not sure what the proper ruling is.

On a batted ball, runner to first has to be in his lane such that if he's hit by a throw outside the lane he's out & the ball is dead. Makes sense since the batter put the ball where the fielder had to go & make a play. It's OK for runner to be outside the lane if a play isn't being made on him or isn't affected by his location.

On this play, there was a passed ball on third strike & runner ran & beat throw. My question is does the running in the lane rule apply here? I'd think not as in this case because the defense put the ball wherever it was picked up & getting the ball around the runner is thus their problem.

Anyone?

Yes runner has to be in the lane. That’s why you see catchers step inside to make throws.

^ Seems/appears that Rule 5.09a(11) still does apply to this situation as best I can tell also. Doesn't make sense that it should to me. Not batter-runner's fault as to where the ball is. Thanks.
