Baseball head coach short list

The name I've seen tossed around the most is Kevin Schnall from Coastal. In-state, went to the CWS in his first year at Coastal.

Powell's probably gonna get at least a cursory look b/c he's been so good at NGU and had a great career here as a player. I think it's worth a look, but I imagine the BOT is gonna want someone with higher level experience.

I saw the TCU head coach's name thrown out there b/c of the Donati connection. I think he's been the CWS...not sure.

Lee, of course, will be on the short list as the interim. He was an assistant here during our team's 3-year run at the CWS. Grew up a fan of the program. If Ray was still AD, he would 100% be our next coach. He's the one Ray wanted before he hired Mainieri. If he could navigate this team to the CWS, I'd consider him. Otherwise, no.

I like Monte and I hope he has success the remainder of the season. That said, I think we need to start fresh. He was with Ray but was also with Kingston and Mainieri-both disappointments. I respect that the guy wants to be a part of the major state programs, get paid well and not have to move his family out of state for another job. But that's also the nature of the business.

Yeah, I'm sure Donati realizes the need to move on and start fresh. I hope anyway.

Ray was here and didn't choose to make Lee the coach...

Everyone knows Lee was Ray's first choice, but the BOT shot it down due to the optics of hiring a coach was previously fired by your school's rival.
I thought Holbrook was always the shoe in as second in command under Ray. I never heard Lee being in consideration but I guess it's possible.

What I meant is that Lee is who Ray wanted in the last coaching cycle, but we ended up with Mainieri b/c the board was reluctant to hire Lee.

Akin to why USC didn't schedule Coastal in intercollegiate competition: BOT pettiness because the Chants broke away from being a USC branch.

Queens has a coach who has proven he can beat SEC teams.

Sadly, I can also list a few more who fit that description...

What I have seen by the best teams out there is they don't shy away from playing any certain way and have their teams ready to play however the flow of the game dictates. They don't make comments like we don't do this or that because it is not who we are. That's what losers say and again, you don't hear solid programs say that crap. That has been the difference in good teams and our team for what seems like decades now. Clearly our coaches have had in mind to play a certain way when they recruit and work the portal so when we can't play a certain way or won't play a certain way it is on them for not making that part of our game or having the personnel capable of executing that way. That is exactly why if someone were to ask me right now, I'd say we need to totally clean house. That said, let's see what Lee can do. I would like nothing more than for him to change my mind.

Hopefully lazy, convenient hires are a thing of our past. Who would Ray Tanner recommend hiring? Monte Lee. No thanks then. Also Lee's wife coaches Clemson's dance team, the Rally Cats. Female dancers at all their football and basketball events. Thanks but no thanks.

Lee also had some very talented Clemson teams but I don't think they made a super regional on his watch. I know they never made it to Omaha.

I like ML.....but this is a great point.
Our program is too rich in history not to shoot for the stars with this coaching hire. The last couple were lackluster IMO (and I was saying that at the beginning of their tenures).
Kevin Schnall
Chris Lemonis
Cliff Godwin

Second Tier:
Tom Walter
Landon Powell (would love him in an asst. HC role at SC)

Also... can't believe Andy Cannizaro hasn't re-surfaced in College baseball of late.

It's a good point. We have no reason to shopping in the bargain bin. I think we still carry enough weight in college baseball circles that we can be seen as a top job. Not with recruits, so much, but among coaches and such, they know you can win big here.

Somewhat like Alabama when they hired Saban. They were mediocre or worse for a decade, but it was still Alabama.

And pulling the trigger this early on Mainieri should help the coaching search.

Unless Carolina increases Schnall’s pay by a good margin ,he’d have no reason to come to Carolina. He has the resources needed and an easier path to Omaha at Coastal.Better look elsewhere.

I mean, unless we make Omaha.. You can't drop a guy who returns us to the CWS after a 15 year drought. Will it happen? Probably not, but if it does, Monte has to be the guy.

Heck, making the NCAA tournament this season would be an incredible feat. 1-5 in the SEC currently with a brutal stretch ahead. But I'll give you that-if we made the CWS he has my vote.

Deep run in SEC tourney along with a regional and I'm inclined to give him a shot. Super Regional and he better be the coach next year. Its not always about winning and losing, but providing the best opportunity for the players to continue their quest at being their best. Manieri wasn't interested in local talent from what I heard. Monte is the local guy that is going to do what's best for USC and its talent rich state. I see D1 players every week watching my son. There are plenty of kids in SC that can compete. I've seen players so far this year that are committed to Ole Miss, Arky, NC, COC, VT and we aren't even a quarter through the season.

Monte brought some top talent to Clemson. He was a good recruiter-just didn't get the results on the field (mainly in the postseason). If I recall, Kingston won a few series against him. Even Kingston managed to take us to a couple Super Regionals.

Im not saying ML is the guy however where his wife works is immaterial.and wouldn't conflict with performance. Its a job.

It would be probably be a deal breaker for some rivalries (OSU-MU) but I was just throwing that out there. I already agreed if he can get us to Omaha the job is his.

UNC Charlotte coach?
A big NO to him. 1 good year winning the Conference USA title, but an overall winning percentage of about 57%. Yes they beat the Cocks last week, then lost to Upstate SC and then lost 2 of 3 to Wichita State. We should aim WAY higher than this guy.

Honestly, the talent on this team is not up to par. The roster needs to be gutted with the exception of several players. South Carolina needs to be able to get a few studs next year and build from there. It's not going to happen overnight, but if we can get some guys in there to make SC a desired destination again and establish some forward momentum, we can build this program back up in 2-3 years, but it's going to require patience from the fan base and administration.

Be real... He never has to work again if he don't want to.... He can stay in state and live life

That's what Mainieri stated regarding building the program back up.. This does not mean that I advocated for his retention.
