The Nightmare Years by William Shirer is a great account of the 1930-40 period.



the supreme irony was how France insisted on laying the entire economic burden of WW1 on Germany --- so they'd not be a threat again

Germany paid WW1 off in 2010 by the way (a war they didn't start)

France reaped the whirlwind during WW2

I think they lost their entire nation in like 3 or 5 weeks

Indeed. Excellent book. Shirer was intimately familiar with the situation. He spent 15 years in Europe (1925-32 in France and 1933-1940 in Germany). His reporting of the 1940 Armistice from Paris beat out everybody, including the Germans.

You know there’s a canyon south of Boulder called Eldorado Canyon, Eldo to locals, one of the premier climbing areas in the country. There is a very famous climb named the Bastille Crack, a 3 pitch crack climb. I know very few of you will understand that, but I do, and I admired them for their love of their country. Goodness knows I had it for mine.
