I think we're going to see a whole lot of mixing the first several weeks. There are a lot of good players and a lot of them are JUCO players that will need to see time sooner rather than later.
What is interesting is that we have a ton of what should be quality backups. That wasn't the case as much last year. This year we have Ryan Shinn and Cam Hill who should be able to play almost anywhere in the outfield at a high level. In the infield we have Troy Black and Alex Rodriguez who could both play second and third, and Rodriguez could play short. We also have Grant Macchiochi who is coming off an injury, but he is a two way guy that I think could basically be a utility player and play anywhere, but is a righty pitcher that was at Missouri and also plays middle infield. We also have more catcher/first base combos than I thought possible. We could conceivably rotate Cottam, Collette, and Squires at those positions and keep them fresh.
One interesting part of this is also what kind of a change, if any, will we have in our batting average? Many times hitters are improved because of who hits around them. They see better pitching because pitchers fear the power or the hitting ability of someone that hits before or after them. Will the loss of White, Reks, and Mahan have an impact throughout, or will there be little to no drop off? Specifically, will guys like Becker be able to hit in the .280s, or better, or will he, and others, have a drop off?
All leading up to me being very excited. Still, I think the lineup that you built is probably about right. There could be some shuffling to that... maybe you hit Pompey second and Johnson third and then have Becker further down. You could also bump Heyer a bit if he has a hot bat. Still, I think that is probably pretty close to what it will be.
