BCG hire likely a factor in not hiring Petrino

I've said on here many times I didn't/don't want Petrino as the head coach. I still stand by that. I believe the BCG fiasco is a big reason why Mitch didn't hire, or even think about hiring, Petrino. BCG was a bad coach but he also brought problems off the court. I don't think Mitch wanted to make that mistake again. Petrino had crashed and burned at the last 2 places he had been. Mitch was likely afraid of hiring 2 people that brought negative attention to the university. I can certainly understand him being afraid to hire Petrino after the BCG debacle as well.

We can argue whether or not Stoops was the right hire or not. I didn't think it was a terrible hire at the time. However, it doesn't seem like Stoops will get it turned around and his days at UK are numbered, whether that be after this season or next. What was truly moronic was making it incredibly hard to fire a guy who hadn't done anything of significance. Just pure stupidity on Mitch's part. No one was going to come calling for Stoops after a 5-7 season.

Look people, it's not complicated.

It's not because of Gillispie.
It's not because he committed adultery.
It's not because he drops recruits, walked out on a pro team, lied about his dedication to multiple schools/positions or is generally a bad character.

It's because he put his unqualified mistress on the state payroll over several qualified applicants, probably illegally, and exposed his employer to tremendous legal liability. UK will never take that kind of risk, not in its athletic department for sure

This is getting stupid. Louisville is going to dominate the ACC and Petrino is going to win. Will another scandal come? I'd bet not. Will anyone care? No. Do recruits and their parents care? No.

This is the crux of the issue.

Was he allowed to coach by the NCAA? Yes.
Was he allowed to coach by UK per rules? Yes.
Was he the best coach available for hire? Yes.
Do recruits care about his past? No.
Do their families care about his past? No.
Did the fans care about his past? Not most.

Those of you who continue this nonsense justifying not hiring him are in for a long decade. Better get those Indiana basketball talking points ready and study up on Peegs. You're in for a long ride.

Now, I disagree with that. College Gameday may talk about two monkeys that caught fire or something else as important, but NEVER UK football.....& I'm really just joking. You're 100% correct on Gameday not mentioning anything about Petrino's past, or if they do, they'll talk about what a turnaround his life has had.

I am pretty sure that BCG had nothing to do with it. If you look back at Mitch's history this is a pretty standard evaluation process for him. If given a choice between a proven winner with a few issues and a nobody that Mitch just simply likes then he will hire the guy that he likes every time. Let's retrace the Barnhart era.

Mike Leach - Proven winner. Was coaching a top 10 team. Was very successful and wanted to return. Mitch didn't even talk to him. Instead hired Guy Morris. When Morris left he had a second chance and Mitch didn't return his calls. Leach contacted UK boosters to try to get a meeting but never did.

Urban Meyer - This was before his Florida days. Still he was successful at both Bowling Green and Utah. Was said to be interested and some UK boosters were pushing for him. He was never contacted by Mitch. We ultimately hired Brooks who ended up being a good hire but Meyer is still coaching.

Steve Spurrier - Same as above. Many fans wanted him as did financial backers of the school. It was reported at the time that Spurrier would never be considered for the job. He was ultimately never contacted and ended up at South Carolina.

Bobby Petrino - Dead horse already beaten but belongs on teh list.

John Calipari - Easily one of the top coaches in the sport. Wanted the job when Tubby left. His first interview after being hired he stated that he even left a voice mail on MB's machine. The message was never returned. We went with Billy G instead. A coach that only had 6 years total as a head man and never went further than the sweet 16. Fortunately that wen up in flames and we got a second shot a Coach Cal.

I'm sure there were other examples with women's basketball, baseball, etc that we passed on more qualified coaches but I don't have the list. Any rate this doesn't look like BCG had any impact. It's actually pretty standard for Mitch.
