Been an up and down week for SSB and family

mom had a stroke on Monday and Tuesday night our 13 yr old border collie died way too soon......he was our hairy child.....then went to play golf yesterday to get our minds off of everything and both of us got a closest to the pin on a par 3 which qualifies us for a "shootout" on August 27th to win anything from a pair of golf shoes (guaranteed) to $10000 (not guaranteedray......this old house is sure too quiet without my walking buddy....they sure wrap themselves around your heart.......my mom is doing fine now so there's a bright side to some of this

Sorry to hear. Hope you mom will do alright. One of the saddest days I have ever had was when my beloved Weimaraner passed away in 2006. The night she passed, it was so heartbreaking as she knew she wasn't going to make through the night and I also knew. It was terrible. Dogs do get in a man's heart.

You're family will be in my prayers. Losing a beloved dog is very hard.

thanks for the kind words.....Lyle had been losing weight and we took him to our vet where they discovered a non cancerous mass that was shoving his organs to one side. We had an appointment scheduled for Thursday in Charlottesville for an ultrasound to see if there was anything that could be done. We were sitting on the couch with him Tuesday when he let out the most bloodcurdling scream I have ever heard in my life and just slumped over. We called our vet who agreed to come to the house and my wife held him while he went to sleep....I couldn't do it.....I guess there is something to this "Steel Magnolia" thing....he died in a place where he loved most...being petted by his momma...he was such a great dog.....thanks for listening......and btw....mom will be fine...she has these mini strokes now and then and this was a mild one

Hate to hear that. I've laid to rest 4 pets in the past 18 months. All natural causes, mostly cancer. One cat did exactly what you described with your dog, a loud scream and fell over and never recovered. Died shortly after before getting to the vet. Had a German Shepherd suffer a stroke (was 14 years old when it happened). Another mix-dog was about the same age this past year and died from a short illness that we thought she was getting over.

Since though, we have gotten a new dog. Nice having another pup around, although this pup isn't like anything we've ever had. A lot more rambunctious than our previous dogs. But fun, nonetheless.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I had a 10 year old lab that died suddenly. Best dog I've ever had. There were no health issues that we were aware of at all. He always slept on the floor at the foot of our bed. He let out a yelp that woke me up and I jumped over to him. I put my hand on him and his heart was beating incredibly fast and then it stopped. With no warning at all, it was pretty hard to take.

Sorry for your loss, but glad that your mother is doing better now.

We had a lab mix that went through a similar situation. He started doing fairly poorly and looked a little bloated. We took him to the vet, and they found a mass in his abdomen. We had a test done, but it wasn't clear if it was malignant or benign. The result was likely the same - surgery wasn't a viable option due to the size of the mass. He held on for a while, but we eventually decided that we had to put him down. He was too far gone, and I honestly feel bad that we let him hang on that long - it felt a little selfish. I miss the guy a lot - good hiking buddy and great with the kid.

We have an English Mastiff and for those of you that aren't familiar with the breed they have a ton of personality and are great guardians of the family. Our female has become the personal protector of my kids and she goes wherever they are. When her day comes it will be devasting to our kids especially my son.

I dreaded the conversation with my daughter - she was a little shy of 3 when he passed. She did pretty well with it. I think that's part of that age though. If she had been 5 or 6, I think that would have been a much harder conversation.
