I think these big leads we let get away are not solely based on the offense. Take the last game. We committed almost 3 times as many fouls, out rebounded by 19, gave up 19 offensive rebounds, they shot 34 FT we shot 12. These are the key to the loss. We had a great shooting first half that gave us the lead. But you can't count on that hot streak to carry for a whole game. Defense and rebounding. Was it against Purdue where they were in the double bonus with 10 minutes left? Seems most of the focus on this board deals with offensive execution and missed shots. We put ourselves in a position to lose these games for several reasons.
The coaches and players are 5 times more devastated by these losses. Be supportive. Despite our record Iike how we battle. We have character.

If I played sports, and thus understood the intrinsic value of character, does it then magically add a column next to wins and losses?
No. Your understanding of the game has nothing to with anything except for your ability to throw out criticism about players and coaches without having any idea of how it works. ..and character is valuable...if you have it you learn from losing and get better and don't give up...If you did play I would bet you would just leave the team because lack thereof...you need to pick a new team to root for...maybe change every week depending on who has the highest win column..

Well said.

But being old school and having character is also accepting criticism. Even embracing it, welcoming it, because it can be constructive.

It's kind of like disagreeing with people. If it's personal, it's incredibly destructive. If it's not, it can be a force for better outcomes.

Agree 100%. Unfortunately there are too many personal attacks on this board. And I get irritated when people who have little understanding of the game throw out these barbs all because of the win column. I am sure CCC gives them all the constructive criticism they need. Mental mistakes are ok to criticize. Physical mistakes (missing a shot for example) are not things to criticize.

Ah, the old “You have to have strapped it on to have a valid opinion” mantra.

Never said that. But it helps. How have you learned all the schemes like a 1 2 2 zone press, pick and roll, switching ,back screen, isolation etc.?. and who to blame when things go wrong?..my guess you are blaming the wrong player.

The win column matters though. It reflects a lot of the things we can't see, but are so important to build a competitive team. We all have our opinions based on what we see. But there's a lot more we don't, some examples:
1) How practices are conducted (example, do we prep properly for games, are we well conditioned, etc)
2) What happens in practice (example, are players working on weaknesses, developing moves, positioning being corrected, etc)
3) Coach demeanor with team (example, does he instill confidence, does he command respect, etc)
4) What happens in the locker room (example, is morale good, is pre-game well prepped, is half time productive, etc)
5) What happens during time outs (example, are we correcting behaviors or just saying useless things like "we got to play better")

The list can go on, and on (pre season, off season, post game...). And that's why we can argue about a million things here, but there are a billion others that are invisible to us. And those show up in the win column... or not.
