The Wildcats will attempt to pull a massive upset Saturday at Louisville, a team that was firmly in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth until its loss against Houston last week. The Cardinals will surely still be plenty motivated against their rivals this weekend, and the two rosters match up pretty evenly in terms of recruiting rankings.

Louisville — despite its success on the field under Coach Bobby Petrino — has not had a recruiting class ranked in the top 30 nationally in the past five years.

Here’s a breakdown of where Louisville’s players were ranked as recruits, with some comparisons to how they stack up — recruiting-wise — to UK’s roster (all rankings from Rivals.com):

good article on the numbers.

Numbers game
Louisville has one five-star player, 11 four-star players, 52 three-star players and 13 two-star players on its roster.

By comparison: UK has one five-star recruit (true freshman offensive lineman Landon Young), 14 four-star recruits, 49 three-star recruits and 10 two-star recruits on its roster this season.

UL has the best player in college ball at the most important position and one of the elite coaches in the game. UK has, well they don't have either. The rest of the rosters are basically a collective push IMO.

What UL has lacked in head to head recruiting has been supplemented by top level transfers and the best dual threat QB in college football. UL has taken chances on players dismissed from other programs and they have stayed out of trouble as well as performed at a high level.

UL was also aided in not losing their quarterback in the second game of the season and having not lost a starting quarterback by transfer.

It's player development and coaching. They're miles ahead of us right now in those areas, obviously. Hopefully that can change.

Without there starting quarterback Louisville player development would not seem as good.

Without looking, I bet UL has twice as many NFL draft picks as we do the last 20 years, and many more "good" NFL players, i.e., ones that play a lot on NFL teams.

Player development on the D-Line has been the most glaring problem.
