Rendezvous in Memphis.
My own is pretty good.

Man, you dudes are killin me.

The Rendezvous is almost Papa John's of Memphis BBQ. Lol.

Next time you're in the BBQ capital try Central BBQ, The BBQ shop, and Cozy's.

You'll never again walk into the Rendezvous unless it's to say you've been. Most people from Memphis call it tourist BBQ.

Re: Mark’s

I buy their smoked chicken and use it to make Gumbo. Phenomenal world class gumbo. So piss off. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Is their food smoked? When I’ve had it it tasted like someone cooked it in an oven or a crock pot. I’ve never seen a smoke ring on anything either. Place is effing terrible.

No idea. I make an almost black dark roux, put in the vegetables, spices, chicken stock, Andouille, and Mark's smoked chicken and call it a day.

Kidding aside... the mark of a good BBQ joint, once they at least get to smoking meat properly, is managing the demand properly so that they don't serve leftovers. I mean, smoking a brisket isn't brain surgery, and it's is a repeatable process. But ensuring the first guy of the day served gets the same quality product that the last guy gets... that's the trick.

Spinoff. Not starting a thread but my favorite chain bbq.

1. Sonny's
2. City
3. Famous Dave's

Montgomery Inn's sauce is good for a change up on the grill at home.

In the BBQ wasteland that is Lexington

Blue Door
Red State
Lyles
J Renders
Edleys
Willies

Those places all range from pretty good to excellent. Seems like a decent number for a place not really know for BBQ.

Other than Blue Door, none of them really stand out. But that’s just my opinion of course. Plus I was so disappointed in Talleys the other day, that my opinion might be skewed a bit.

If all you know are those places, they’d rate pretty well. But those that know different wouldn’t rate them well.

1. Franklin BBQ in Austin. Absolutely worth the 4-5 hour wait to stand in line for the most amazing brisket you could put in your mouth. They even have a sauce that's the best I've ever had.

2. Old Hickory BBQ in Owensboro. I grew up on this place, and I went to high school with the pitmaster/owner. The best in town easily.

3. Blue Door Smokehouse. The best brisket and potato salad in Kentucky. Worthy of some of the best BBQ joints in Texas.

4. Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL. Excellent barbecue and the best baked beans I've ever had.

5. Scott's BBQ in Hemingway, SC. Super old-school pit barbecue, super nice people, and as good a pulled pork dinner as you will find in the Carolinas.

I need to get back to Texas and do a BBQ tour of Snow's, Louie Mueller's, La Barbecue, Valentina's, and Kreuz's. Maybe more.

++Rudy's

It will not win many best of awards but it is good BBQ.

I moved back to KY in 2006 and the three things I miss most about Austin is the weather, the TexMex, and the BBQ.

I always make a trip to Rudy's when I get back there for business. We would mess people up when they came to visit us in Austin telling them we were taking them to lunch at a gas station.

I miss the TexMex more than the Q, you can have the weather.

Across the river from Ft Benning, Ga in Phenix City, Ala is a mom and pop joint called Porky's that has the best pigsicles (pork ribs) that I've ever had throughout the south. Tender as a good mothers love!

Fishin' Pig in Farmville, VA. They also have very, very good catfish, and I generally dislike seafood.

They also have a location in Waynesboro, VA. I assume the food is the same but I have no idea.

Ate there (Farmville location) once on a Saturday evening. Went back for Sunday brunch and after biscuits & brisket, eggs, gravy and taters, I needed a designated driver.

I've never been for brunch. Not really the type of place I'd want to eat at on my own, and I'm not tagging along with my married friends for brunch :joy:

What did you get on Saturday? I normally only go for lunch on Mondays when they have a half price menu. 5 or 6 of their staple main dishes with one side. Normally get fries because they just give you a ton of fries. They don't charge for water so I get that and with tip I'm out of there for like under $7 and keeps me pretty full until dinner and I'll normally eat that late after eating at the Pig.

Got the Smoke Shack sampler, wife had the catfish basket, and we just sampled from both. You live in Farmville? Seems like a nice community.

Smokin Pig in Pendleton, SC and Blue Door are the best two for me.

Pig has the two truest tests of a BBQ joint; it’s a gravel parking lot and only open Thurs - Sat.

Technically Hampden-Sydney, though I can use Farmville as the city for my mailing address and I still get the mail. Turn right at the stop light by Fishin Pig, instead of turning left into the Fishin Pig parking lot, and I am out that way.

It's a good place to be if you want something safe, small, inexpensive, and quiet. It's great if you like buying luxury furniture as a large bit of the downtown shops are luxury furniture stores. So downtown is pretty lame for me since I can't afford to drop a few thousand on a couch, for example.

Very little to do here, even less if you aren't the outdoorsman type. The damn school I work at redesigned their website and put a section of the site on things to do around here and the very first option was road trip [laughing]. That didn't go over well with admissions recruiters and the coaches. School has a problem with it being a suitcase school when football isn't home in the fall and you tell people the top option for stuff to do is to leave?

A lot of people who work around here will commute from the Lynchburg, Charlottesville, or Richmond areas. The type of place very few people would consider to be a desirable place to live. If I ever want to get married, chances are I'll have to leave.

Luckily I'm pretty content with just staying home watching TV and sports. Even them I can get pretty sick of being around here. Luckily I can normally to get back home to Lynchburg for one weekend a month. It's pretty freaking brutal here in the summer. I don't know how the hell someone can raise a damn kid here if they can afford to live elsewhere.

I've had barbeque all over, and my whole top ten comes from Texas. Specifically Dallas, Austin, ft worth.

I’m not sure if that’s fair though. Texas BBQ is first and foremost brisket, which has a hell of a lot more flavor on its own than pork. It’s why we have “best steak” threads and not “best pork chop” ones.

I break down my BBQ restaurants by pork, beef and ribs. For beef, it’s one of several in and around Austin. For pork, it’s a tie between Bubba’s just north of Charlotte and Arthur Bryant's. For ribs... hell, if they're cooked properly they're great just about from anywhere.

Starnes BBQ, Paducah,
Hell Paducah's BBQ is so good they Red shirt new BBQ restaurants. It is all in the Sauce, not lathered up like Ketch up that people call BBQ sauce. Great vinegar based sauce. No freaking mustard but great BBQ with sauce the way it is supposed to be. Any time back I buy 2-3 bottles of Starnes BBQ sauce to take back.

Leigh's in West Paducah is awesome, Harned's in Reidland, Starnes with their toasted bread, RC cola, Tom's chips. Geez. Knoth's in Lake area is good, There is a guy in Ballard Co. who is just a little stand that makes better BBQ than most, places pale to Paducah and W. Ky. area. Owensboro is good not Paducah BBQ.
