Bichon....zero shedding and won't affect you if you're at all allergic to dogs.....not sure if that's too small for you or not

Airedale Terrier. No shedding, easy for people with allergies. Smart. Naturally protective. But.....

They need to be groomed 3 or 4 times a year. They also need regular exercise.

When my kids were little we got one of these.

Super intelligent, very athletic (often trained as frisbee dogs), great with kids, easy to train. An Australian Shepherd. I loved my Aussie! Medium sized dog. Full grown he was about 45-50 lbs. They do shed, and they need lots of regular grooming.

But the best dog for me is not the best dog for you. Lots of variables including your lifestyle, how much room you have, your desire for a high-energy dog or low-energy dog, and your overall expectations of having a dog. No shortage of resources out on the interwebs about how to select a breed that fits your family.

Rottweilers. They do shed in the spring to blow our their undercoat but if you brush them for a week or two it's all good.

Have had several and they the best combo of best friend/no one will contemplate breaking in your house dog you can find for a young person.

False. Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Thread is closed. Mods, ban anyone for further insolence.

Ridgebacks are fine but they couldnt hold a Rottweilers jock with 2 hands and a wheel barrow. Mods - ban kooky on the grounds of insanity.

Beagles. They're cute. They're docile. They can be active or lazy, but do need regular exercise. They shed some, but it can be easily brushed out. You'll never have to pay for a haircut.

They're pack animals, so if you plan to chain them up in the back yard, choose another breed unless you like the sound of a sad dog baying all the time. (Scratch that. If you plan to make it an inmate in your back yard, don't get a dog.)

Shelties are great dogs around anyone, but they do bark at everything that moves.

Just get a bullmastiff. Sure they are big..but they are big babies. Completely docile, goofy, extremely loyal, can live in a small space, don't bark, and are independent.

However, the negative: drool

I love hounds, but are you sure they can be active?

On third dog now, first Cocker Spaniel, second Puggle, now mini Goldendoodle.

Puggle was a great dog. Laid back, friendly, everyone loved him.

The OP's question is best dog, not the best breed. So Lassie is the obvious answer. She has grossed over $30 million at the box office, will save your life whenever needed and never ages.

If you're 25-45 and don't like insane shedding. No tiny dogs and no small horses.

If you are talking a house dog we have a mini Schnauzer that is a great dog. She doesn't shed much at all. My wife has allergy issues and this is the 1st one that we have owned that doesn't bother her.

I like Redbone hounds.

Had one growing up, and it was a great dog. Super intelligent. Always longed for a Bluetick hound. But never have had the right setup for one. When we had that redbone it was in the country with a lot of space.

I was always against Golden Retrievers just because of the shedding, but man my GF's dog is a Golden and it's up there with the best dog I've ever come across. Smart, sweet, easygoing. But they do shed like a mf'er for sure.

That was my first dog. My dad breeds, trains and runs English Setters.

I have an English Setter and it is one of the best dogs that I have ever owed. Extremely family friendly and calm as long as she gets her daily walks. I will probably get another in a year or two. Is your dad's operation in Kentucky?

Yeah. I wouldn't really call it an "operation" more of his passion. He had his first liter of puppies last fall. Sold two males and kept the rest. Think he has 5 or 6 total right now.

That is great. Had to drive to Akron, OH to get my current setter.

I have 2 dogs... a mutt that was turned in by someone at the humane society and a Bell County stray that walked up to me. They're awesome because nearly all dogs are awesome.
