My Bassett Hound sleeps 23 hours a day.

Though he does enjoy a walk.

Had a Basset growing up. Awesome, loyal, loving, lazy dog! We had him for 13 years and had to put him down when I was in college; one of the hardest things I've ever experienced. I intend on getting one when my daughters get a little older. The wife doesn't know it, but it's going to happen.

Had a Chow mix. Was the best dog I have had until now. Have a Pyrenees mix now and she is awesome. Protective, smart, obedient, and loyal to a fault.

I have a Pyrenees mix now. A chow lab and a lab. I like most big dogs.

Vizsla will be my next dog, when I have land and more time to train/hunt/exercise it.

As of now, it's hard to beat a boxer for a good dog. They're playful, somewhat/mostly easy to train, don't have an undercoat, and you won't have too much maintenance on coat/cleanliness, etc.

Great with kids too.

The OP's question is best dog, not the best breed. So Lassie is the obvious answer. She has grossed over $30 million at the box office, will save your life whenever needed and never ages.

Only if your name is Timmy.
