Someone to consider is Thomasville’s EJ Abrams-Ward. Played on three state championship football teams and, in four years, played fullback, wide receiver, linebacker and quarterback at different times. In his four years, the Bulldogs were 56-4, with two 16-0 seasons.
EJ also starred on two state basketball championship teams. Ironically, his best sport was probably baseball. He was the AP Male Athlete of the Year for North Carolina in 2007-2008 and was the number one football recruit in the state. Made a huge mistake in signing with Tennessee over State, UNC, Clemson and South Carolina. Got caught up in the coaching change there and was dismissed from the team.
That began a downward spiral that resulted in failed attempts at comebacks and legal trouble. He was undoubtedly the best overall high school athlete that I personally saw play.
He was a great athlete. Don’t think I saw him play football but I watched him play basketball a couple times, I believe against Cherryville and W-S Prep. I thought for sure he’d be a pro athlete. Reminded me a lot of Charles Briggs from Lincolnton.

He could have been. But he let life get in the way.
This is the truth. There was a great athlete from a neighboring county, and I am not going to say his name for reasons that will be clear in a second. He was a great running back and dazzled on the basketball court. But he went nowhere after high school and he OD’d just last year or year before last. I don’t think he lived to be 35. You have to be able to overcome the problems you face in life the same as those you face in sports.

There is nobody in NC with the Resume that Kendre Harrison (Max Preps AOY) and Dionte Neal (NCGPOY , Naismith AA) have had. 5 State Championship appearances in 6 attempts…going on 7 of 8…89-1 career Basketball records with 3 State Appearances. Dionte was literally a holding call away from being the Max Preps AOY the following year Kendre got it. 3rd in voting behind Jackson Cantwell and Boozer. If we dont lose Jariel Cobb last year we handle ER and Brevard and have a crack at Monroe. But both have All American status every single season but 1 in both sports. Both have John Wall MVPs , Finals MVPs , Dionte had 12 interceptions as a Freshman. Returned Kicks and Scored TDs in both State Title appearances. He is the most electric HS athlete on this planet! He will win Max Preps AOY this year and NCGPOY again with Mr Basketball. Nobody can compare to what they have done.
