Who are the individuals who have and the best freshman seasons at NU?

Going back in my fandom, the Newman/Hardy/Lepore group all started, but by virtue of lack of talent. (That’s usually the case.)

Without looking at stats, the group is, in approximate order:
Mc
Coble
Juice
Crawford

Law
Cobb
Shurna
Pardon
(Sobo)
(Ben Johnson)

Everyone else

Nance and Kopp and Greer not considered here.

Am I forgetting anyone?

It’s worth noting - and unsurprising - that the “best freshman” and “best players” lists line up pretty closely. Hearn might be the only top ten senior that wasn’t a top ten freshman.

It’s tough to be a good freshman, but it’s also tough to be a really good player when you’re not a good freshman.

Good post and list. I am looking for Miller Kopp to make big strides in the immediate future. He is very aggressive on the offensive end and capable of scoring in bunches so don't be surprised when he starts netting double-digit B10 scoring efforts.

It looked like he might have a big game against MSU. Still hopeful.

I'd add Geno Carlisle to the list.

11.7 ppg
76% ft
36% 3-pt
40% shooting

And that was on a putrid team where nobody else had to be guarded.

TJ Parker stacks up well also.

Watch him on defense though. Outside of one game, he has had a lot of difficulty. Obviously I hope he improves...

Kopp is having a very good freshman year. I imagine the last 2/3 of this season could make it a great year for him.
Unlike Nance, Kopp had somebody working with him and developing him, so he already belongs.

Very good? He has one game in double figures, Chicago State. In the other 13 games he's averaged 4 points and 2 boards. Not knocking the kid, just saying that 4 and 2 in 16 minutes a game isn't what I call "very good". More like FY "growing pains".

Now THAT'S "very good"!!!

Also, his freshman year was the second season freshmen could play varsity. The only player to log minutes before his arrival was Tim Teasley, so as far as the usual accounting for oldtimers’ rants, the only players who could be added have come since McKinney played.

The absence of freshmen is pretty bizarre to think about now. In an exhibition scrimmage, in the fall of 1965 the UCLA Frosh team, led by then Lew Alcindor beat their varsity, the defending national champs, by something like 22 points.

Ahhhhh!! We have a winner!!

And all without the 3-pt line.
My favorite McKinney story. Tex did not start him in his first game of his Frosh season at Ohio U. Five minutes in and we are already behind so in comes Billy. He hit his first five shots and the Cats rallied to win the game. Billy had some GREAT games in his career including leading NU to its only win in 15 tries vs. Kentucky his senior year.
