I have lived in AZ for 9 years now (retired here from CA). 8 months of great weather (car AC on for most of today) and 4 of miserably hot, stay in the house weather. Considered FL and spent several months there. Couldn't stand the humidity. Glad I chose AZ. Every place that one can afford to live has its pros and cons.
What's wrong with Sedona or Flagstaff in the summer?

I'll pass on Arizona. Not enough vegetation for me. Place is like a wide open parking lot with no trees.

Florida ----> Arizona.
Agreed. Geography matters.

Arizona mountains and deserts offer a unique beauty, but Florida has the coasts, swamps, rivers, thousands of lakes and amazing springs.

Granted, FL humidity is horrible. Mosquitos are a pain. All the tourists and snowbirds suck.

Gotta go with what's best for you.

Well said Austin. No way in hell will i give up two different coasts of saltwater. Beach life is awesome.

The older I get the more I am thinking about New Mexico. Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters kind of thing going on, I guess.

High desert country is very appealing to me. I can totally see myself camping my senior years away somewhere out there.

Best states to retire is subjective. Lots of people says Hawaii and western continental states, but if you have family back home and something happens that you need to be there in a relatively short amount of time, it's not going to happen that far away. Even if you just want to be at your grandkids middle school graduation or whatever, it's going to cost a bunch and going to take a good while to get there. Heaven forbid you have a loved one on their deathbed that you would like to see before they pass or just be there for someone else to lean on.

I've been researching this for years and more goes into where you want to live than many think.
