You don't gobble up Texas. They join you if they choose, on their terms. Ridiculous, but true. I'm not even sure arrogance is the right word. It's the only state that used to be a sovereign nation, maybe that's it.

Texas was not the only one. Vermont, California, and Hawaii also were sovereign states before joining the US.
