“We’ve got a stipulation in our contract to begin conversations in March of ’24,” Bowlsby said of negotiations for the next media deal. “We won’t likely do much before that.”


OU and Texas could be in the SEC by March of ’24.

“They’ve told us they will stay until June 30, 2025,” Bowlsby said. “So that’s what we’re planning on.”
I wouldn’t count on OU or Texas sticking around that long, even if their grant of rights agreements with the Big 12 dictate they do so.

I'm thinking 2023 or 2024 (just in time for the new SEC deal to go into effect). They'll still have to pay a considerable amount of money, but not as much as if they left next year.

Long way away still for the BIG 12 next set of rights negotiations to begin. Impossible right now to know what sort of value those rights are going to hold years from now with different membership. Also impossible for us to know if other teams from other conferences or within the B12 will move elsewhere in the meantime which would cause more movement.

As of this moment the Big 12 owns every member's home broadcasting rights until July 1, 2025, including UT and OU. That is indisputable. The exit fee will be about $76-80 million regardless of when a member leaves. That is also a lock.

This situation is going to be awkward, but especially with the coaching change it's unlikely OU will dominate any conference for 2 or 3 years with so many starters and recruits jumping ship. In the long run it may help them. If they want out in 2023 they are going to have to make a reasonably generous offer to include both the exit fee and regaining broadcast rights early.

I think it's safe to say 'pennies on the dollar' will not even get a sniff. $120 million each might do it. We now see new coach's buyouts approaching at least half that number. I'm sure the new schools would love to play either OU or UT at least one year, two if possible. A 14 member conference for 2 years should not be a problem, it's done elsewhere. So what if 'horns down' is no longer a penalty unless it's in an opponent's face?

As far as WVU going to the ACC along with ND, be careful what you ask for. You may end up back in the old Big East. We know Clemson and FSU want out ASAP. Now Miami's grumbling although I don't know where they think they would go. Their value is approximately the same as WVU.

No intelligent fan wants WVU in the ACC.

For goodness sake...their champ is barely in the top 15 and going to bowl game in lovely Atlanta.

The acc champs are behind a three-loss Utah team.

Going against a team that finished third in the Big 10 East....nice reward for a conference champ...lol.

However it pans out I hope that the Big 12 can figure out a way to have everybody play everybody, at least in all the sports except football. Even if there are 12 teams I would favor everybody playing everybody (11 games) which would leave one spot open for the non-conference opener. I know it's radical but I have conferences with divisions because who you do NOT play counts as much as who you DO play to decide the conference title opponents. Which leads to mismatches. In the Big 10 there sometime is a team that is the FOURTH best team in the conference but gets into the title game because they didn't play #1, #2 and #3 during the regular season.

The BIG 12 will have to see how their sos is considered by ESPN in order to determine scheduling. Frankly don't see it dropping since several additions are at least as good as Texas has been if not superior. Plus one could make the case that there is going to be a Cincinnati (of this season) level team each year as well--equaling Oklahoma in the sos department.

But then you have to see who and how many P5s the Big Ten, PAC and ACC are playing. If they play two, then you will have to as well OOC for sos comparisons to not hurt you.
